What is an entry level private equity?

An entry-level private equity job typically involves working as an analyst or associate, supporting investment professionals in sourcing, evaluating, and managing investment opportunities. Responsibilities include financial modeling, market research, due diligence, and assisting with portfolio company operations. These roles require strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of finance and accounting. Most entry-level hires have prior experience in investment banking, consulting, or a related field.

How to get a job in entry level private equity with no experience?

Entry level private equity roles typically require strong analytical skills, financial modeling, and understanding of investment concepts. Networking and demonstrating a strong work ethic can also help break into the industry without prior experience.

How do I start a career in entry level private equity?

To start a career in entry level private equity, candidates typically pursue a bachelor's degree in finance, economics, or related fields and gain experience through internships or analyst roles in investment banking or consulting. What does an entry level private equity do?

A typical day for an entry level private equity professional involves conducting market research, building and updating financial models, analyzing company performance, and preparing presentations for internal teams or clients. You'll often support more senior associates and partners in due diligence tasks and may help screen potential investment opportunities. The role also requires frequent collaboration with colleagues across finance, legal, and operations departments. Because the work is dynamic and deal-driven, your daily tasks can vary based on current projects or investment stages, providing valuable exposure to the full investment lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in entry level private equity?

To thrive as an Entry Level Private Equity professional, you need strong analytical skills, financial modeling abilities, and a solid understanding of accounting and finance, typically demonstrated through a relevant degree such as finance, economics, or business. Familiarity with Excel, PowerPoint, financial databases (like Bloomberg or Capital IQ), and sometimes progress toward a CFA certification can be advantageous. Exceptional attention to detail, effective communication, and a proactive, team-oriented mindset help candidates excel in this field. These skills and qualities are essential for evaluating investment opportunities, supporting deal execution, and collaborating with colleagues in a fast-paced, data-driven environment.

About the Opportunity

A lower middle-market private equity firm (representative of the firms in our network) is seeking a highly motivated, analytically strong Entry-Level Private Equity Associate. This role is ideal for someone who wants to work directly on live deals, portfolio companies, and investment decisions early in their career.

Youโ€™ll work in a lean deal team environment where your work actually matters: modeling, due diligence, and investment committee materials โ€“ not just slide formatting.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities
  • Build detailed operating and transaction models (3-statement models, DCF, LBOs, sensitivity analysis).
  • Analyze returns, capital structures, and downside scenarios for potential acquisitions.
  • Conduct valuation analyses using comparable companies, precedent transactions, and other relevant methods.
  • Support the due diligence process across financial, commercial, operational, and legal workstreams.
  • Analyze target company financials, KPIs, customer cohorts, and unit economics.
  • Conduct industry and competitive research to understand market dynamics, trends, and risks.
Investment Committee Support
  • Draft and refine investment memos and presentations for the Investment Committee.
  • Summarize key findings from diligence and articulate the investment thesis clearly.
  • Present data-backed opinions on risks, opportunities, and value-creation levers.
  • Support portfolio management teams with dashboards, KPIs, and performance tracking.
  • Help identify operational improvements, growth initiatives, and strategic priorities.
  • Assist in bolt-on acquisition analysis, refinancing considerations, and exit scenarios.
What Makes This Work Exciting

Direct exposure to founders, CEOs, and management teams.

Real impact: the work you do influences whether millions of dollars are invested.

Rapid learning curve in M&A, operations, and strategic finance.

Ideal Candidate Profile

This is a representative profile firms in our network look for:

Education & Technical Skills
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Engineering, Math, or similar field.
  • Very strong Excel skills; able to build & audit complex models.
  • Solid foundation in corporate finance, accounting, and valuation.
Experience (Formal or Informal)
  • Prior internships or full-time experience in investment banking, PE/VC, consulting, or corporate finance is a plus (but not always required if youโ€™re exceptional).
  • Demonstrated interest in investing, deals, and business analysis (clubs, projects, side hustles, or self-directed learning count).
Soft Skills & Mindset
  • High ownership mentality โ€” you donโ€™t wait to be told what to do; you hunt for answers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication โ€” you can tell the story behind the numbers.
  • Comfortable with long hours when deals are live and stakes are high.
  • Curious, humble, and coachable โ€” willing to learn fast and iterate.
