About The Role

We areseekinga highly motivated individual to join the launch team ofNature Mechanical Engineeringas an Associate or Senior Editor.

Mechanical engineering is truly an interdisciplinary field. Mechanical engineers are involved in the design, development, and manufacture of devices and systems that havemovingparts,across scales from nanotechnology to large aerospace systems. Mechanical engineers are critical innovators inalmost everymajor field, including robotics and automation, aerospace and ocean engineering, materials and manufacturing, human health, energy, and environmental sustainability.

Launching in 2027,Nature Mechanical Engineeringwill publish high-impact research across all application areas of mechanical engineering, as well as fundamental mechanics of immediateinterestto the community. As the first broad-scope, flagship journal dedicated to mechanical engineering, it will connect academia, industry, and policymakers,showcasingthe critical role mechanical engineers play in building a better future.

We are open to applicants with expertise in aerodynamics, robotics and automation, biomedical robotics and tools, and acoustics. Other expertise within mechanical engineering is also welcome.

Role responsibilities:

  • The successful candidatewill be part of the journal launch teamand play a key role inshaping, developing, andestablishingthe journal from the very beginning.
  • Handle original research papers and work closely with editorial teams on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection, overseeing peerreviewand making well-reasoned decisions.
  • Contribute to content development and strategy in the represented area.
  • Commission and edit content such as Reviews,Perspectives, andComments, andwriteeditorials.
  • Work extensively with editors at other journals in theNatureportfolio.
  • Attend conferences and visit research institutions.

Required Skills, Qualification and Experience

Essential:

  • Applicants must have a PhD, with a strong track record in research relevant to the fields covered in the journal.
  • Broad scientific knowledge and training.
  • Excellent literary and communication skills.
  • The ability to absorb new areas of research.

Desirable:

  • Postdoctoral experience.
  • Previous editorial experience.
