Summary
The entry-level laborer has limited or no experience in commercial concrete construction yet brings an excellent attitude with a willingness to learn, work hard, and improve their skills. This role supports all functions of commercial concrete projects through housekeeping, toting materials, setting formwork, shoring, and placing concrete. Entry-level laborers are exposed to several main types of commercial concrete work, including sub-structures, elevated structures, parking ramps, and tilt, to name a few. These structures allow the entry-level laborer to understand footings, mass footings, walls, columns, shoring, decking, formwork systems, gang forms, reinforcing, and post-tension systems. Communicating effectively with supervisors, teammates, and other trades is expected, as well as asking questions to increase growth and development.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Safely perform general labor tasks on concrete construction sites, including power and standard hand tools.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including a hard hat, high-visibility apparel, and additional protection as required by the task.
  • Assist with moving materials by hand, placing concrete, installing, restoring, and maintaining clean, well-organized job sites.
  • Work in a variable environment, both indoors and outdoors. When required, work during inclement weather, including extreme heat/cold.
  • Communicate effectively with your crew lead, foreman, and superintendent on safety, ask questions, and problem-solve.

Required Experience, Education, and Qualifications

Work Environment/Physical Demand
This position works outside at job locations in a typical construction site environment, should be able to lift 80 pounds, and requires long periods of walking, standing, and working in all sorts of weather (hot, cold, and rainy days).

Position type, travel, and expected hours of work
This full-time field position requires travel to local job locations in and around Traverse City, MI. Typical hours will range from 45-50 hours per week and are subject to change. This role requires working nontypical days and irregular hours based on construction schedules. Due to the critical nature of the role, accepting phone calls even during nontypical workdays and hours is also necessary.
