What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Hardware Integration Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Hardware Integration Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electronics, computer architecture, and basic programming, typically supported by a degree in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with hardware testing tools, schematic capture software (such as Altium or OrCAD), and basic lab equipment is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate hardware integration, efficient troubleshooting, and seamless collaboration across engineering teams.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level hardware integration engineers during their initial projects?

As an entry level hardware integration engineer, one of the most common challenges is adapting to new hardware platforms and understanding the complexities of integrating various components, such as sensors, processors, and communication modules. You may also encounter issues with hardware compatibility, troubleshooting unexpected system behaviors, and keeping up with documentation standards. Working closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams is crucial for overcoming these hurdles and learning best practices in real-world environments.

What does an Entry Level Hardware Integration Engineer do?

An Entry Level Hardware Integration Engineer is responsible for assisting in the design, testing, and implementation of hardware components within larger electronic or computer systems. They work with senior engineers to ensure various hardware parts, such as circuit boards and processors, function together seamlessly. Job description

What we're building
Our vision is to make it easy and accessible to manufacture a product. We're starting with a desktop Pick and Place machine, used to assemble electronic components onto circuit boards.
Existing Pick and Place machines are expensive and can require high-pressure air and three phase power. Some only accept job files on a floppy disk. Traditionally, Pick and Place machines have only been used by large companies with factory space, so that's how they're designed.
But they don't need to be this way. Our machines facilitate mid-scale manufacturing, where you make your product at a moderate scale before making the risky and expensive jump to a factory contract. With our hardware, anyone can do a production run of their product in-house.
What we're looking for
We're looking for someone that is excited by our vision, has experience shipping hardware, and is ready to wear a lot of hats. We're a small team growing quickly. There will be constant opportunity to take on new responsibilities and have serious impact on the direction of the company.
You will be responsible for working on new products at Opulo. Integration Engineers at Opulo are full-stack engineers. This includes designing mechanical parts in CAD, designing circuit boards, writing firmware and software, performing lifetime and validation testing according to a PRD, and helping spin up manufacturing. You will help define Opulo's next generation of products. If you're excited at the idea of wearing many hats and enjoy taking ownership, we want you at Opulo as an Integration Engineer.
Core Responsibilities
  • Help design our next generation of products with manufacturability and cost in mind
  • Prototype your designs and test against PRD specifications
  • Work closely with Product to determine what approach best solves the problems of our customers
  • Work with Manufacturing to get your designs into production
  • Design and fabricate jigs for our production team to use while assembling hardware

Basic Qualifications
  • Incredibly high agency and self-driven
  • Proficient in CAD software (Solidworks, Onshape, Fusion, FreeCAD)
  • Proficient in KiCAD
  • Very comfortable with C++ for embedded targets
  • Very comfortable with Python
  • Can communicate technical information clearly and concisely
  • Very familiar with FDM 3D printing, bent sheet metal fabrication, cutting injection molds
  • 2-3 years experience as an Integration Engineer (or similar)
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent, and most important, integrating resistors
  • Comfortable pushing at a fast but sustainable pace

Bonus Qualifications
  • Experience in FreeCAD
  • Worked with pick and place machines before

What we value
We value these above all else:
  • Mission - keeping our customers and builders in mind
  • Pragmatism - making the most effective decision with the resources available
  • Agency - taking total ownership of your tasks, and finding a solution regardless of roadblocks
  • Kindness - showing compassion to our colleagues, customers, community members, and ourselves

Perks and Benefits
  • Comprehensive Health, Dental, and Vision insurance
  • Flexible PTO plan
  • Full access to our prototyping shop, machines, and video equipment
  • Many opt-in events and company socials
  • An opportunity to have a significant impact on manufacturing

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
Even if you don't check every box, but see yourself contributing in some way, please apply!
