Job Summary

The GIS Technician I position is responsible for working alongside GIS staff members in a dynamic, challenging, and fun environment. This position is entry level and will work directly with the GIS Manager and GIS team members on several community outreach and real property projects.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and maintain GIS datasets and linkages to various databases.
  • Perform basic spatial analysis on data using GIS
  • Read and interpret source documents, plat maps, property deeds, and legal descriptions.
  • Enter required data into a standardized GIS database.
  • Generate map documents that are incorporated into community outreach materials; and
  • Communicate and work alongside GIS staff and other team members with varying short/long-term deliverable schedules.
  • Must self-perform quality assurance of work product prior to technical review and be open and willing to receive feedback as a learning/growth mechanism.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills are a must.
  • Proficiency with database management and queries.
  • Must possess documentation, organization and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and quality, customer service skills and the ability to work well in a team environment are essential.
  • Working knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and techniques used in researching, delineating, mapping, and documenting real property.
  • Established skills and experience in GIS and applications (Esri ArcGIS Pro, Arc GIS Desktop), including file management, and data compilation and editing procedures.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and computations of real property.
  • Ability in research of land surveys, real estate documents, and other land records.
  • Ability to assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer utilizing a variety of business software; and
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in GIS or related field.
  • Provide documentation, such as a portfolio, of their work experience as part of the interview process.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working with GIS, which may include class assignments, internships, or previous employment.
  • Experience with GIS and applications (Esri ArcGIS Pro, Arc GIS Desktop), including file management, and data compilation and editing procedures.
  • Valid driverโ€™s license.

ย Preferred Education and Experience

  • Knowledge of the Spatial Data Standard for Infrastructure and Environment (SDSFIE) concepts.
  • Experience with GIS databases (SDE) and versioning workflows; and
  • Experience with basic scripting and programming.

  • Lifting: must be able to exert up to 50pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
