Job Summary
The Custodian I is an entry-level position responsible for maintaining clean, safe, and sanitary conditions throughout university buildings and facilities. This role performs a broad range of custodial duties including routine floor care, surface cleaning, disinfection, trash and recyclable removal, and light furniture moving. The Custodian I operates standard custodial equipment and is expected to follow established cleaning schedules and protocols to support a healthy campus environment. This position works independently and as part of a custodial team under direct supervision.
Responsibilities
Custodial Cleaning & Maintenance - 40%
- Perform daily cleaning of restrooms, classrooms, locker rooms, showers, offices, residential dormitories and apartments, community rooms, exercise rooms, study rooms, and other occupied areas.
- Clean and sanitize hallways, stairwells, and floor mats on a scheduled frequency (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly).
- Wash and clean windows, walls, trash receptacles, glass surfaces, and doors.
- Dust and clean facility walls, mirrors, light fixtures (using extension dusters from floor level), fire alarms, fire extinguishers, drinking fountains, facility signage, ceiling fans, window ledges, doorknobs, and kick plates.
- Apply appropriate cleaning and disinfecting agents to surfaces in accordance with safety standards and product guidelines.
Floor Care &Outdoor Cleaning - 30%
- Perform routine floor care including sweeping, dust mopping, wet mopping, and vacuuming across all assigned areas.
- Ensure all floor surfaces are clean, safe, and free of debris, with particular attention to high-traffic areas.
- Maintain the cleanliness of hallways, stairwells, and common floor areas on a scheduled frequency (daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly).
- Sweep exterior walkways, porches, and stairways attached to university facilities as assigned.
Furniture & Equipment Management - 15%
- Move office and dormitory furniture and equipment as required to facilitate thorough cleaning.
- Ensure furniture and equipment are carefully and properly returned to their original positions following cleaning.
- Handle all furniture, fixtures, and equipment with care to prevent damage during custodial operations.
- Inspect custodial equipment prior to use and confirm it is in proper working condition.
- Report damaged or malfunctioning structures, furniture, or equipment to the supervisor in a timely manner.
Administrative & Operational Support - 10%
- Attend scheduled departmental meetings, safety training, and professional development courses as required.
- Collect and dispose of daily trash and recyclable materials from all designated areas within assigned facilities.
- Select and use appropriate cleaning tools, chemicals, and materials for specific tasks in accordance with established procedures.
- Report damage to structures, equipment, or facilities to the supervisor promptly.
- May operate a university vehicle (car, truck, or golf cart) as needed to perform assigned duties.
Other - 5%
- Perform other cleaning-related duties as assigned by supervision.
- Perform specialized disinfection procedures and biohazard (bodily fluid) clean-up in accordance with university safety protocols and applicable regulations.

Proposed Salary
