Job description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS Perform entry level professional duties of moderate difficulty providing the opportunity for professional training in various offices throughout the City. Perform assigned duties to acquire knowledge of methods, procedures and standards required for successful performance. Specific activities vary by department.

Work is performed under direct supervision. This internship is with the Parks and Recreation Department located at Simpson Park, 1725 Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave in Lakeland, FL.

Interns will work a maximum of 30 hours a week. This internship begins in June. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Creates, organizes and supervises a wide variety of programs and recreational activities, including team and individual games, athletic contests and sporting events; assists with and conducts tournaments; supervises free play.

Registers patrons and collects and tallies fees for various classes and checks in supplies and equipment. Maintenance of the facility is expected Enforces rules and regulations; maintains safeguards against accidents and instructs children in safe use of equipment. Monitors game room, weight rooms, and gym.

Reports hazardous conditions and accidents and administers first aid when needed. Instructs individuals and groups in recreational activities; maintains discipline in recreational areas. Handles related paperwork such as attendance records and requisitioning supplies.

Participates in staff meetings; assists in planning special events; provides information about programs to parents and other citizens. Able to work nights and weekends ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform related work as required QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE) FOR HIGH SCHOOL INTERN: Current enrollment as a Junior or Senior in an accredited high school. Required: A Resume is required for consideration for this position.

FOR COLLEGE INTERN: Enrollment in or recent graduation from a degree seeking program in an accredited college or university. Required: A Resume is required for consideration for this position. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite - specifically Word and Excel Knowledge of Group games and activities Copy editing and excellent grammar Must be willing to spend time outside Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with supervisor, co- workers, other City employees and the general public Skill in communicating effectively both verbally and in writing, and to request clarification when needed WORKING ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS: Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis, routine keyboard operations The job risks exposure to no significant environmental hazards The job requires normal visual acuity, and field of vision, hearing and speaking All City of Lakeland positions are subject to testing (e.g
