Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to work with a diverse group of colleagues in providing academic learning support, in the form of tutoring, to SSS TRIO participants from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Provide academic tutoring in English, writing, reading, and composition to support student success in coursework
  • Assist students with writing processes, including brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, and editing
  • Support student understanding of writing concepts such as grammar, sentence structure, organization, thesis development, and academic style
  • Reinforce course content from lectures, readings, and assignments to strengthen comprehension and writing skills
  • Provide individual and small-group tutoring sessions and support occasional academic workshops as needed
  • Support development of student study skills, including reading strategies, organization, time management, and test preparation
  • Refer students to appropriate TRIO staff and campus resources as needed
  • Communicate professionally with students, faculty, staff, and campus partners
  • Maintain appropriate documentation of tutoring services in accordance with program requirements
  • Participate in required trainings, meetings, and professional development activities as scheduled
  • Support student success initiatives by encouraging the use of academic support resources, including Tutor.com
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong knowledge of English, writing, and reading comprehension demonstrated by one or more of the following: completion of relevant coursework with a grade of "A" or "B" in English Composition or higher-level writing courses; associate's degree or higher; relevant certification; or related tutoring/teaching experience supported by faculty or employer recommendation
  • Ability to explain writing concepts clearly and support student learning effectively
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work with diverse student populations
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a structured academic support environment
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite and internet-based applications
  • Strong organizational skills, professionalism, reliability, and commitment to confidentiality
  • Commitment to supporting student success in an academic support environment
