Position Summary
The English/Reading Instructor serves as a full-time faculty member within the Lane Institute Student Success Center and plays a critical role in supporting the academic success, retention, and persistence of first-time and early college students. The instructor will primarily teach general education reading, writing, developmental English, and English composition courses designed to strengthen foundational literacy, critical thinking, communication, and academic success skills.
This position emphasizes high-quality instruction, instructional coordination, student engagement, early academic intervention, and continuous improvement through assessment and data-informed practices. The instructor will work collaboratively with faculty, academic advisors, student support personnel, and academic leadership to support student achievement and promote a culture of academic excellence.
In addition to classroom instruction, the instructor supports English and writing placement assessment-including the administration, monitoring, and interpretation of placement results-and contributes to the design and development of writing studios and literacy support services for students who need to strengthen their writing and academic literacy.
The ideal candidate is student-centered, collaborative, innovative in instructional delivery, and committed to supporting diverse learners in a collegiate environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction and Instructional Coordination
• Teach assigned reading, writing, developmental English, and English composition courses in accordance with institutional standards and course learning outcomes.
• Utilize effective and engaging instructional practices that support diverse student learning needs and promote student success.
• Develop and maintain course syllabi, instructional materials, assignments, assessments, and learning activities aligned with institutional and departmental expectations.
• Integrate technology, active learning strategies, and evidence-based instructional practices into classroom instruction.
• Maintain accurate and timely records of attendance, grades, student progress, and course documentation.
• Participate in curriculum alignment, instructional coordination, and course standardization efforts across assigned courses.
• Support first-year student transition initiatives and contribute to a positive learning environment that fosters academic confidence and engagement.
• Maintain regular office hours and provide academic support and mentorship to students.
• Develop and facilitate supplemental student engagement and academic support programming designed to strengthen collegiate reading comprehension, academic literacy, critical reading, writing proficiency, and communication skills. Such programming may include workshops, skill-building sessions, academic success seminars, writing support initiatives, and other instructional interventions that promote student achievement and persistence.
Placement Assessment and Writing Studio Development
• Administer, manage, and monitor English, reading, and writing placement examinations, ensuring testing integrity, consistency, and compliance with institutional placement policies and procedures.
• Interpret placement scores from Accuplacer and other approved placement instruments to determine appropriate course placement, identify students who would benefit from additional writing and literacy support, and inform instructional and intervention planning.
• Design, develop, and oversee writing studios and structured literacy support environments that provide targeted, individualized assistance to students who experience difficulty with writing, composition, and academic literacy.
• Establish writing studio protocols, resources, peer- and faculty-support models, and outcome measures, and use the resulting data to evaluate effectiveness and continuously improve writing and literacy support services.
Assessment, Data Collection, and Continuous Improvement
• Participate in institutional and departmental assessment initiatives related to student learning outcomes and general education competencies.
• Collect, analyze, and report instructional and student performance data as requested.
• Utilize assessment findings and student performance metrics to inform instructional improvement and student support strategies.
• Assist with course evaluation, curriculum refinement, and continuous improvement efforts.
• Maintain compliance with institutional reporting requirements and academic policies.
Retention and Early Alert Coordination
• Monitor student attendance, participation, academic progress, and engagement throughout the semester.
• Submit timely early alerts, referrals, and progress reports for students exhibiting academic or attendance concerns.
• Collaborate with academic advisors, student support services, tutoring programs, and other campus stakeholders to support student retention and persistence.
• Participate in student success initiatives, intervention efforts, study support programming, and related retention activities.
• Encourage student accountability, academic skill development, and effective learning strategies.
Collaboration and Professional Development
• Collaborate regularly with the English Department on curriculum alignment, assessment practices, instructional strategies, course sequencing, and student learning outcomes related to general education English and reading instruction.
• Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to support institutional goals and student success initiatives.
• Participate in departmental meetings, institutional committees, workshops, trainings, and professional development opportunities.
• Support institutional accreditation, compliance, and quality assurance initiatives as appropriate.
• Maintain professional knowledge of current trends, technologies, and best practices in English, reading, developmental education, composition instruction, and student success.
Qualifications
Education
• Master's degree in English, Reading, Composition, Rhetoric, English Education, Literacy, or a closely related field from an accredited institution required.
Experience
• Minimum of two (2) years of teaching or educational experience required.
• Experience working in higher education, developmental education, college readiness, or secondary education with upper-level high school students preferred.
• Experience teaching first-year college students and diverse student populations preferred.
• Experience utilizing instructional technologies, learning management systems, and student success platforms preferred.
• Experience administering and monitoring placement assessments and interpreting placement data, such as Accuplacer, to guide course placement preferred.
• Experience designing, developing, or coordinating writing centers, writing studios, or literacy support programs preferred.
