Job description
Job Title: Reading Specialist
Supervisor: School Building Principal
Job Summary
The Reading Specialist is responsible for providing direct instruction to students, individually or in small groups, to enable students to develop literacy skills. Provide direct instruction in the areas of reading and writing for identified groups and individual students, with an emphasis on emergent, beginning, and transitional readers. Provide coordination, collaboration, and innovation in reading curriculum and instruction, so that each student may drive maximum benefit from the K-8 reading curriculum.
Qualifications:
โ€ข Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major/minor in literacy or English
โ€ข A current, valid Michigan teaching certificate with Reading Specialist (BR) endorsement as required by the Michigan Department of Education
โ€ข A minimum of three years teaching experience
Essential Duties
โ€ข Gather, organize, interpret and/or present data to staff for use in designing interventions
โ€ข Work with Transformation Specialists in the delivery, training and support of district reading materials
โ€ข Work with individual or groups of at-risk students on reading/literacy skills
Performance Responsibilities:
โ€ข Develops and implements a remediation plan for students who have comprehension test results identified as minimal.
โ€ข Design and implement reading academic interventions using research-based methodology.
โ€ข Communicate with school personnel and parents of children regarding reading levels and rate of progress.
โ€ข Gather, compile, and disaggregate data; and link that data to student learning and instruction.
โ€ข Differentiate instruction based on assessment data.
โ€ข Document interventions and progress on each child.
โ€ข Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
โ€ข Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
โ€ข Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
โ€ข Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
โ€ข Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
โ€ข Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of school district.
โ€ข Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
โ€ข Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
โ€ข Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
โ€ข Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
โ€ข Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
โ€ข Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
โ€ข Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
โ€ข Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
