Engineering Tech and Mechanical Technician roles share similar educational backgrounds and certifications, but differ mainly in their work environments and daily tasks. Engineering Techs focus on supporting engineering projects and testing, while Mechanical Technicians handle hands-on maintenance and repairs. Both roles are vital in manufacturing and industrial sectors, often overlapping in skills but distinct in responsibilities.

What are Engineering Techs?

Engineering Techs, or Engineering Technicians, are professionals who assist engineers in designing, developing, testing, and maintaining various products, equipment, or systems. They often work in fields such as manufacturing, electronics, civil engineering, or mechanical engineering. Their duties typically include preparing technical drawings, conducting experiments, collecting data, troubleshooting problems, and ensuring that projects meet quality and safety standards. Engineering Techs bridge the gap between theoretical engineering concepts and practical application in the field.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineering roles in fields such as petroleum, aerospace, and software engineering can reach or exceed $300,000 annually, especially with extensive experience, specialized skills, and leadership responsibilities. What are engineering technology jobs?

Engineering technology jobs involve applying engineering principles to develop, test, and improve products, systems, or processes. These roles often require technical skills, familiarity with tools like CAD software, and may involve working in manufacturing, construction, or research environments. Professionals in this field typically hold an associate or bachelor's degree in engineering technology or a related field.

What can an Engineering Technician do?

An Engineering Technician assists engineers by preparing technical drawings, conducting tests, collecting data, and maintaining equipment. They often work with CAD software, follow safety protocols, and may require certifications or technical training. Their role supports project development, troubleshooting, and ensuring engineering standards are met.

What are some common challenges Engineering Techs face when working on cross-functional project teams?

Engineering Techs often collaborate with engineers, designers, and production staff, which can present challenges such as communicating technical details to non-technical team members and balancing multiple project priorities. Adapting to different workflows and ensuring that technical documentation aligns with the needs of each department are also common hurdles. Developing strong communication skills and being proactive in seeking clarification can help overcome these challenges and contribute to project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Tech, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, technical mathematics, and hands-on experience, usually backed by an associate degree or relevant certification. Familiarity with CAD software, measurement instruments, and industry-specific testing equipment is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure precise execution of engineering tasks, support innovation, and maintain project efficiency and safety.

Job description

As the nation's first statewide, "transmission only" company, VELCO manages the safe, reliable, cost-effective transmission of electric power throughout Vermont and as a part of the integrated New England regional network.
Primary Purpose
As VELCO's IT Systems Platform Engineer, you will be a key contributor to the modernization of enterprise IT systems. This role focuses on business systems transformation-designing, implementing, and supporting modern, cross-platform enterprise solutions that improve security, resiliency, and efficiency. You'll work across compute, storage, and cloud platforms, with secondary responsibilities in infrastructure support, ensuring that enterprise systems are seamlessly integrated, secure, and future-ready.
Responsibilities
  • Provide the lifecycle support of the compute and storage platforms, including coordinating and executing security and other updates, upgrades, and patching of Windows server, VMWare, and storage (SAN & HCI) platforms. In managing the environment, you will also look for opportunities to continuously develop these platforms.
  • Architect and deploy modern technology platforms and solutions to support VELCO's digital transformation goals, including adoption of cloud platforms, SaaS tools, and enterprise collaboration solutions.
  • Provide technical expertise supporting strategic initiatives across the company in creating solutions to meet emerging projects.
  • Implement and maintain business continuity and disaster recovery solutions, ensuring resilience and compliance.
  • Support IT security initiatives through vulnerability management, endpoint protection, data loss prevention, and regulatory compliance.
  • Contribute to infrastructure projects as needed, including network integration, VPN support, and SCADA/EMS systems, while keeping primary focus on business platforms.
  • Create and maintain documentation, runbooks, and knowledge resources to support operational excellence.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Training
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related discipline (or equivalent experience). Industry certifications in cloud, systems, or security (e.g., AWS, Azure, VMware, Microsoft) strongly preferred.
Experience
  • 5+ years in IT systems engineering with direct experience implementing modern enterprise platforms.
  • Strong background in Windows Server, VMware, and storage administration.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), identity management, and enterprise SaaS applications.
  • Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as NERC CIP, HIPAA, SOC, or NIST.
  • Exposure to enterprise networking and security tools (Cisco, Palo Alto, FortiGate, SD-WAN) is a plus, but not the core focus of this role.

Knowledge/Skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability with a focus on business systems improvement.
  • Proficiency with:
    • SSO & Modern Authentication (Okta, AzureAD, SAML, OIDC)
    • Legacy Authentication (RADIUS, IWA, Kerberos)
    • Backup technologies (VEEAM, Rubrik)
    • Monitoring/management tools (PRTG, Prometheus, DataDog, SolarWinds).
    • ITSM ticketing and change management
    • DevOps technologies: Version Control (Git), Containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and cross-team collaboration skills.
  • Ability to balance priorities in fast-paced and regulated environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Physical/Mental Demands
Prolonged periods of working on a computer. Must be able to maintain fast pace while completing complex, analytical work, in potentially stressful situations, with competing priorities, within tight timelines and with frequent interruptions. Must be able to work additional hours when necessary. Periodic travel and overnight stays will be required when attending industry workshops, trainings, etc.
Compensation Range:
$90,916.80 - $109,100.16 - $127,283.52/salary
This compensation range represents the minimum, midpoint and maximum pay for this position. Individual offers will be based on various factors including, but not limited to, qualifications, education, skills, competencies, and experience. Please note that most offers for new employees fall under the midpoint of the range, allowing room for continued salary growth.
