What Is an Engineering Manager?

Engineering managers supervise teams of engineers and other professionals whose jobs are to collaborate on designing and developing products ranging from medical equipment to computer hardware to electrical components. Your job duties are to coordinate with teams and departments, help engineers troubleshoot and problem-solve, and make sure everyone stays on schedule to meet design and production deadlines. You need strong project management skills, extensive engineering knowledge, and excellent communication and leadership skills to succeed as an engineering manager.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, typically with a degree in engineering and prior technical experience. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and potentially certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for successfully leading technical teams, delivering projects on time, and aligning engineering output with organizational goals.

How does an Engineering Manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

What are Engineering Managers?

Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for leading and overseeing engineering teams within an organization. They coordinate projects, manage team members, allocate resources, and ensure that engineering goals align with company objectives. Their role often involves a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and administrative skills to deliver successful engineering solutions on time and within budget.

Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description

About ValPay

ValPay is a leading payments platform within the Valsoft ecosystem, delivering integrated payment solutions across a diverse portfolio of vertical SaaS businesses. Our mission is to simplify and optimize how businesses process payments by embedding seamless, secure, and scalable payment capabilities directly into software workflows.

As we continue to scale, we are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead and grow high-performing teams while driving the development of robust, scalable systems that power our payments infrastructure.

About the Role

As an Engineering Manager at ValPay, you will be responsible for leading a team of engineers, driving execution, and ensuring the successful delivery of high-impact initiatives across our payments platform. You'll operate at the intersection of people leadership, technical strategy, and delivery, partnering closely with Product, Architecture, and business stakeholders to build scalable, secure, and high-performing systems.

While this role remains technically informed, the primary focus is on team leadership, execution, and impact at scale, rather than day-to-day coding.

What You'll Do

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineers through coaching, feedback, and career development
  • Foster a high-performance, collaborative, and accountable engineering culture
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and retention of top engineering talent
  • Set clear goals, expectations, and performance standards for the team

Delivery & Execution

  • Own delivery of key initiatives, ensuring projects are executed on time and at a high level of quality
  • Partner with Product to align on priorities, scope, and roadmap execution
  • Remove blockers and proactively manage risks across projects
  • Establish and improve development processes to drive team efficiency and predictability

Technical Leadership & Strategy

  • Provide guidance on system design, architecture, and technical decision-making
  • Partner with senior engineers and architects to ensure scalable, secure, and reliable system design
  • Uphold best practices in code quality, testing, and system performance
  • Balance short-term delivery with long-term technical health

Platform & Payments Innovation

  • Contribute to the evolution of ValPay's payments platform across multiple SaaS businesses
  • Ensure systems meet high standards for scalability, reliability, and security (including PCI considerations)
  • Support integrations with third-party systems, APIs, and payment providers

AI & Engineering Productivity

  • Drive adoption of modern developer tooling, including AI-assisted engineering solutions
  • Identify opportunities to improve team productivity, automation, and development workflows
  • Partner with product and business teams to explore AI-driven enhancements to platform capabilities

What You Bring

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience, with 3+ years in an engineering management or team leadership role
  • Proven experience leading and scaling high-performing engineering teams
  • Strong understanding of system design, distributed systems, and API-driven architectures
  • Experience working with cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
  • Ability to balance technical depth with strong people leadership and delivery focus
  • Experience working in high-growth, product-driven environments

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience in payments, fintech, or embedded finance
  • Familiarity with PCI compliance, security, and transaction processing systems
  • Experience leading teams working on integrations and third-party APIs
  • Exposure to frontend technologies (React or similar)

Why Join ValPay?

  • Lead and scale engineering teams within a growing payments platform
  • High ownership and impact across a diverse SaaS ecosystem
  • Work at the intersection of payments, platform, and AI innovation
  • Opportunity to shape both technology and team culture at scale
