Franklin County Emergency Services Department is recruiting for a full-time, credentialed Paramedic. An employee in this position performs paramedic level advanced life support work in the Emergency Medical Services Program. Work involves performing advanced emergency care including the administration of life-sustaining treatment to patients on-site and while en route to the appropriate medical facility in accordance with protocols and standards established by the EMS system and Medical Director. Work involves responding to the scene of emergency and non-emergency calls, applying the necessary medical treatment of sick or injured persons, and transporting persons to a medical facility or from a medical facility to patient's home or specialized medical center. This employee is responsible for all medical care of the patient.
Work also involves inspecting and testing EMS units and apparatus, maintaining proper inventory of equipment and supplies; cleaning and sanitizing vehicles, units, apparatus and equipment daily; ensuring that they are in proper and good working order; making routine adjustments, and reporting other than minor defects for specialized attention. Maintaining cleanliness and performing minor maintenance of Emergency Medical Service facilities. Assisting with the direction and control during disaster situations. Completing requiring paperwork and reports.
Work is performed under the supervision of a Paramedic Captain. Work is evaluated based upon verbal and written performance reports, through observation, and periodic conferences.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Responds to emergency calls, providing basic and advanced life support treatment to patients, as well as transportation to the appropriate medical facility; functions at the EMT-Paramedic level; abides by the Franklin County government safety standards and regulations.
Performs emergency medical acts in accordance with protocols and standards established by the EMS System and Medical Director; administers approved medications via approved access routes, administers specified solutions by vascular access infusion, performs pulmonary ventilations and obtains 15-lead EKG's for cardiac diagnostics; performs patient assessment and basic life support techniques in accordance with established protocols including, airway management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, oxygen administration, hemorrhage control, treatment for shock, bandaging and dressing soft tissue injuries, splinting of fractures and dislocations, treatment of injuries to the head, face, eye, neck, and spine, treatment of injuries to the chest, abdomen and genitalia, provision of basic life support for medical injuries, assisting in normal and abnormal childbirth, treatment of injuries as a result of exposure to heat and cold, treatment of burns, lifting and moving patients for transfer to a medical facility.
If requested may respond to non-emergency calls, such as requests to transport patients from hospital to their homes or from a local medical facility to a specialized medical center.
Participates in a continuous training program to improve competence in medical technical work and in and operation; studies street and road patterns and networks of the County in order that future runs may be made with minimum difficulty and delay.
Inspects and tests EMS units and apparatus, maintaining proper inventory of equipment and supplies; cleans and sanitizes vehicles, units, apparatus and equipment daily; ensures that they are in proper and good working order; makes routine adjustments, but reports other than minor defects for specialized attention.
Maintains cleanliness and performs minor maintenance of Emergency Medical Service facilities; cleans, sweeps, mops, etc.
Assists with the direction and control during disaster situations.
Participates in informal training activities and in formal in-service training classes to maintain required certifications; attends other training opportunities.
Participates in community outreach programs; conducts training in First Aid and CPR classes; attends programs such as Tar River Festival, Safe Kids, Bike Rodeo, car seat awareness, etc. to promote safety and prevention awareness and to provide information on services.
Completes required paperwork and reports.
Provides assistance to members of volunteer emergency medical service organizations as requested.
Performs other related work as required.
Desirable Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school and moderate experience in advanced emergency medical service work as a Paramedic; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Must possess NC Office of Emergency Medical Services certification as a Paramedic.
Special Requirement:
Certification by the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services as a Paramedic; Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification; Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification or acceptable equivalent; Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support certification or acceptable equivalent; Completion of NIMS 100, 200, and 700; Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license. Please refer to Title 21, Sub Chapter 32H, Section.0501 of the North Carolina Administrative Code for specific certification requirements.
Must have the ability and willingness to work a 24-hour shift including day, night, weekend, holiday hours and inclement weather.
