What are some common challenges Email Developers face when working with different email clients, and how can they be addressed?

Email Developers often encounter inconsistencies in how various email clients render HTML and CSS, which can make it challenging to ensure emails look and function as intended for all recipients. To address this, developers typically use inline styles, tables for layout, and test across multiple platforms and devices using tools like Litmus or Email on Acid. Staying up to date with client-specific quirks and best practices is essential, as is collaborating closely with designers and marketers to align on feasible design elements. Proactively addressing these challenges helps ensure a consistent and accessible experience for all users.

What is the difference between Email Developer vs Email Marketing Specialist?

AspectEmail DeveloperEmail Marketing Specialist
Primary FocusDesigning and coding email templates and campaignsPlanning, executing, and analyzing email marketing strategies
SkillsHTML, CSS, responsive design, email client compatibilityMarketing strategy, analytics, copywriting, segmentation
CredentialsWeb development or coding experience often preferredMarketing or communications background often preferred
Work EnvironmentMarketing teams, agencies, or in-house departmentsMarketing teams, agencies, or in-house departments

While both roles are involved in email campaigns, Email Developers focus on creating and coding the email templates, ensuring they display correctly across devices. Email Marketing Specialists handle the overall strategy, content, and analysis of campaigns. Understanding the differences helps organizations assign the right tasks and professionals for successful email marketing efforts.

What is an Email Developer?

An Email Developer is a specialized professional who designs, codes, tests, and optimizes email campaigns and newsletters for marketing or communication purposes. They use HTML and CSS to create responsive and visually appealing emails that render correctly across various email clients and devices. Email Developers also work closely with designers, marketers, and project managers to ensure emails meet branding guidelines and achieve desired outcomes, such as increasing engagement or conversions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Email Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Email Developer, you need expertise in HTML, CSS, and responsive design, along with a strong understanding of email marketing best practices. Familiarity with email service providers (ESPs) like Mailchimp or Salesforce Marketing Cloud, as well as tools for testing and troubleshooting emails across clients, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are key soft skills for collaborating with marketing teams and ensuring high-quality deliverables. These skills are essential for creating engaging, functional, and accessible email campaigns that drive business results and user engagement.

What Is the Job of an Email Developer?

An email developer designs and builds email blasts for clients and marketing teams. In this career, your duties primarily revolve around creating templates in HTML. This involves having an eye for visual design as well as the technical capability for coding. When coding the email, you have to account for a variety of different browsers, text options, and email clients, which makes it a very different task than coding a web page. Furthermore, you need to be aware of the limits of the email service provider your organization is using, and you must stay up-to-date with any new regulations regarding spam and industry standards regarding HTML.

Email Marketing & CRM Manager

Job description

Trek Travel provides global cycling, hiking, and walking vacations of a lifetime with the goal of helping more people actively explore and experience the world. We're looking for an Email Marketing & CRM Manager to own our email marketing and CRM as a connected, revenue-driving system โ€” translating brand and growth priorities into a lifecycle program that builds the list, moves prospects toward booking, and keeps guests engaged long after the trip ends. The email strategy is only as good as the data behind it, and the data only matters if it drives bookings โ€” you'll own both, and you'll be accountable to the result.
AI is a core part of how this role operates. We expect this person to use it fluently and daily โ€” to plan faster, communicate better, document more thoroughly, and stay ahead of whatโ€™s coming.
Good to know: if youโ€™re local to Madison, WI, this role works from our office or warehouse space a minimum of three days per week.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:ย
  • The full email lifecycle strategy: acquisition, nurture, conversion, post-trip, and re-engagement
  • List growth, including capture strategy, lead magnets, form optimization, and list health
  • HubSpot implementation strategy โ€” defining how the CRM should be structured, which workflows to build first, and how to set up the platform to support long-term email and sales goals.
  • CRM workflow design and iteration โ€” building, testing, and refining as the platform matures and the team learns what works.
  • Contact database integrity โ€” auditing for duplicates, gaps, and structural problems before they affect downstream execution.
  • Segmentation architecture that reflects guest behavior, trip interest, and lifecycle stage, with targeting logic refined from behavioral signals.
  • Drip and nurture sequences with clear trigger logic, timing, and progression toward booking, including mapping journey gaps and building sequence frameworks.
  • The email calendar, coordinated across brand, digital, and sales priorities.
  • End-to-end campaign execution โ€” brief, copy direction, build, QA, deploy, with AI used as a team member to generate, iterate, and personalize copy across segments at speed.
  • A/B testing across subject lines, content, timing, and journey logic to find patterns across every variation.
  • Performance reporting that connects marketing activity directly to bookings, tracking the full funnel from first email open to confirmed reservation, then turning results into optimization recommendations.
  • Lead capture infrastructure, ensuring digital inputs flow cleanly into CRM without data loss.
  • Direct partnership with the sales team to align on lead quality, hand-off timing, and pipeline visibility.
WHAT ELSE WE'D LIKE TO SEE FROM YOU:
  • 4+ years owning email marketing strategy and CRM end to end.
  • Experience building and implementing CRM programs from the ground up.
  • Proven ability to build list growth programs and segmentation frameworks from scratch.
  • Deep HubSpot experience across campaigns, workflows, automation, and reporting.
  • A track record of connecting marketing metrics to revenue and understanding what drives bookings.
  • A belief that clean data and great email strategy are the same job.
  • Strong analytical skills with a bias toward action โ€” you know what to do with the numbers.
  • A strong writer, or a sharp creative director who can get great copy out of others.
  • Comfort operating at the intersection of brand, digital, and sales.
  • An AI-first mindset โ€” you use these tools daily to generate, analyze, test, and optimize across every part of the role.
TREK TRAVEL OFFERS:
  • A fast paced, casual, motivating, and fun company culture, where initiative and pro-activity are highly valued.
  • Competitive health care
  • Dental and vision insurance
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Short Term / Long Term Disability
  • Life Insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Competitive paid time off and volunteer time off package
  • Paid holidays
  • Reward program for sustainable commuting to the office
  • Employee discounts and outdoor industry discounts
  • Room to grow within our Marketing and Digital teams
At Trek Travel, we think outside the box, continuously improve, encourage feedback, and give it all we got, all the time, no exceptions. This is a full-time exempt position and is eligible for Trek Travelโ€™s competitive benefits package. This position reports to the Digital Marketing Manager and will work cross-functionally with brand, digital, and sales on shared priorities. This position is based at our office located in Madison, Wisconsin, with a hybrid/on-site arrangement.
If you have what it takes to join our team and the desire to help shape Trek Travelโ€™s future, we wish you the best of luck and look forward to your application!
Trek Travel is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
