Position Summary

Mesabi Metallics is seeking an experiencedย Design Engineer specializing in Electrical, Instrumentation, and Automation systems, responsible for managing and executing complex projects in the steel sector, with a focus on iron ore mining, beneficiation, pelletization, and downstream iron & steel making. The incumbent will lead the design, implementation, and commissioning of electrical and automation systems, ensuring their reliability, efficiency, and adherence to safety standards throughout the project.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering design, development, and implementation of electrical power distribution, instrumentation, and automation/control systems for iron ore mining, beneficiation, pelletization, and downstream iron & steel making.
  • Develop, review, and approve electrical and instrumentation drawings, specifications, Bill of Quantities and datasheets.
  • Design control systems including PLCs, SCADA, DCS, and other automation solutions tailored for process efficiency and safety.
  • Coordinate with project teams including mechanical, civil, structural, piping and process engineers to ensure integration of E&I systems.
  • Conduct technical evaluations of vendors and subcontractors, ensuring compliance with project specifications and industry standards.
  • Support installation supervision, testing, and commissioning of electrical and instrumentation systems.
  • Ensure compliance with US standards and regulations (NEC, NFPA, ISA, OSHA).
  • Troubleshoot and resolve electrical and instrumentation issues during design, construction and commissioning phases.
  • Prepare technical documentation, progress reports, and project status updates.
  • Support risk assessments, safety reviews, and quality assurance activities.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and technical staff.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 7 to 15 years of experience in electrical, instrumentation, and automation engineering within the steel, mining, or mineral processing industries.
  • Hands-on experience with power distribution systems, control panels, PLC, DCS, SCADA, and industrial automation.
  • Proficient in electrical design software (AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP, EPLAN) and automation tools.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation such as flow meters, pressure transmitters, level sensors, analyzers, and associated control loops.
  • Strong understanding of US codes and standards including NEC, NFPA, ISA, OSHA.
  • Experience managing large-scale industrial projects from conceptual design to commissioning.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and under pressure.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification or equivalent.
  • Certifications in automation (e.g., Certified Automation Professional (CAP)) or project management (PMP).
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity for industrial control systems.
  • Experience with energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives.
  • Familiarity with advanced automation technologies including IIoT and Industry 4.0.

Education

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree Masterโ€™s degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or related field.

Physical Requirements

  • This position is a mixture of field work and office duties. Field work will be conducted daily throughout the year so exposure to the elements (rain, snow, cold, heat, etc) is to be expected. The office duties will require work in front of a laptop, desk, and phone.

Salary Range:

  • $120,000ย - $150,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
