Electrical Design Engineer Intern information

What does an electrical design engineer intern do?

An Electrical Design Engineer Intern assists in designing, developing, and testing electrical systems and components under the supervision of experienced engineers. Their tasks often include creating and reviewing technical drawings, performing calculations, building prototypes, and supporting documentation processes. Interns gain hands-on experience with industry-standard software and tools while learning about safety standards and industry regulations. This role provides valuable exposure to the design process and helps interns develop practical engineering skills for future careers.

What is the difference between Electrical Design Engineer Intern vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectElectrical Design Engineer InternElectrical Engineer
QualificationsEnrolled in or recent graduate of electrical engineering or related programBachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in engineering firms or manufacturing companiesFull-time professional role in design, development, or testing
ResponsibilitiesAssisting in design tasks, learning industry standards, supporting senior engineersDesigning electrical systems, analyzing specifications, overseeing projects

The main difference between an Electrical Design Engineer Intern and an Electrical Engineer is experience level and responsibilities. Interns are typically students or recent graduates gaining practical experience, while Electrical Engineers are full-time professionals responsible for designing and managing electrical projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical design engineer intern?

To excel as an Electrical Design Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and a relevant academic background in electrical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Altium Designer), simulation tools, and basic programming or PCB design is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns contribute meaningfully to design projects and collaborate with teams. These skills ensure accurate, innovative designs and smooth project execution, laying a strong foundation for a future engineering career.

What types of projects and daily tasks can an electrical design engineer intern expect to work on?

As an Electrical Design Engineer Intern, you will typically assist in creating schematic diagrams, updating CAD drawings, and performing basic circuit calculations under the guidance of senior engineers. You may also be involved in prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting components, as well as documenting design changes. Interns often collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as mechanical engineers and project managers, to ensure design integration and project timelines are met. This hands-on experience helps build both technical skills and an understanding of real-world engineering workflows.

Job description

Location: Mankato, MN Security Clearance: N/A What You’ll Do
You’ll own the full product development lifecycle — from initial concept through production release — for new electronic and electrical products, while also driving improvements to existing ones. This is a hands-on engineering role with real ownership and variety. Core responsibilities include: • Leading innovative electronic/electrical design from concept to production, including schematic creation, prototyping, and design iteration • Building and managing project timelines, budgets, and quality targets independently • Designing, fabricating, and evaluating rapid and conventional prototypes for performance and reliability • Writing product specifications, test plans, and verification documentation • Conducting feasibility studies, competitive testing, and design qualifications • Troubleshooting complex electrical/electronic issues during development and post-production • Generating Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and maintaining complete engineering documentation • Collaborating cross-functionally with manufacturing, operations, and outside suppliers on tooling, assembly, and capacity planning What You Bring • Education: BSEE, BSET, or equivalent • Experience: 5+ years in electrical design engineering, ideally in consumer products • Strong command of schematic reading and design tools (simulation, analysis, CAD) • Hands-on experience taking products from napkin sketch to manufacturable design • Solid grasp of financial modeling and NPD processes • A creative problem-solver with sharp analytical instincts and clear communication skills The Bottom Line
If you like owning projects end-to-end, working across the full stack of hardware development, and seeing your designs go from bench to shelf — this role delivers that.
