What is an EHR product manager?

EHR Product Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and improvement of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems in healthcare organizations. They work closely with stakeholders such as clinicians, IT teams, and regulatory bodies to ensure the EHR software meets user needs, complies with healthcare regulations, and supports efficient workflows. Their role involves gathering requirements, prioritizing features, coordinating with development teams, and managing the product lifecycle from conception to launch and ongoing updates. EHR Product Managers play a key role in optimizing patient care and hospital operations through technology.

What are some common challenges EHR product managers face when balancing user needs and regulatory compliance?

EHR Product Managers often navigate the complex task of aligning user-friendly features with strict healthcare regulations such as HIPAA. Balancing clinicians’ requests for intuitive workflows with mandatory compliance requirements can lead to competing priorities. Successful EHR Product Managers collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—especially compliance, engineering, and clinical stakeholders—to ensure the product remains both practical for end-users and fully compliant.
