Job description

Job Title: Manager, Software Engineering

Who We Are:

Spot & Tango is an innovative pet health & wellness brand that delivers personalized meal plans on a subscription basis. Our recipes are developed by leading animal nutritionists, and are made with only real, human-grade ingredients... and nothing artificial! We have lofty goals (to make every dog in the country healthier, and every pet parent happier!) and we are looking for the right people to help us get there. This is an exciting opportunity to join a VC-backed, high-growth, e-commerce startup and have an outsized impact in an extremely fast-paced environment. Plus, you get to think about dogs all day!

Who You Are:

We're looking for an experienced Software Engineering Manager to lead a team of engineers across our Growth and Emerging product areas. In this role, you will be responsible for team execution, technical direction, and developing engineers, while partnering closely with Product and Design to deliver high-impact initiatives.

This is a hands-on leadership role — you'll guide architecture and contribute technically where needed, but your primary impact will be through team leadership, prioritization, and delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Delivery
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of engineers, fostering a high-performance and growth-oriented culture
  • Own outcomes for your team's product area, including roadmap delivery, quality, and impact on key business metrics
  • Partner with Product and Design to define scope, prioritize work, and drive alignment
  • Manage team capacity, planning, and tradeoffs across initiatives
Technical & Operational Leadership
  • Help define technical strategy and guide architectural decisions for your team's domain
  • Define and track key metrics for team performance, system reliability, and delivery effectiveness
  • Establish and uphold engineering best practices across the stack
  • Ensure high code quality through reviews, testing, and observability
  • Drive improvements in performance, especially across web and mobile experiences
  • Identify and resolve bottlenecks impacting team velocity or system performance
  • Champion security and data integrity
  • Drive adoption of AI-assisted development tools and workflows to improve engineering velocity, code quality, and team productivity
Team & Culture
  • Coach engineers on career growth and performance
  • Own hiring and team building, raising the bar for engineering talent
  • Shape team structure and onboarding to support scale
  • Foster a collaborative engineering culture

Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of experience building and shipping production systems
  • 2–4+ years of experience leading engineers (manager or tech lead)
  • Strong system design skills, with experience building scalable web applications
  • Experience working across the stack (React / React Native + backend systems such as Django or similar)
  • Proven ability to drive execution and deliver results through a team
  • Experience partnering cross-functionally with Product and Design
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Experience with AWS or similar cloud platforms
  • Experience with performance optimization and observability tooling
  • Background in high-growth or startup environments
  • Familiarity with DTC / e-commerce environments preferred
  • Dog lovers are a plus!

If you have a passion for technology, a desire to work with a high-performing engineering team, and are excited about the prospect of contributing to the growth of a DTC startup, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity.

This is a hybrid position.

You must be able to commute into our office in Midtown Manhattan Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Spot & Tango is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
