What is a division chief?

Division Chiefs are senior leaders in organizations, usually responsible for overseeing a specific department, division, or functional area. They manage teams, develop strategic goals, allocate resources, and ensure their division meets organizational objectives. Division Chiefs often serve as the main point of contact between upper management and their division, providing guidance, support, and communication. Their role is critical in aligning departmental efforts with the broader mission and vision of the organization.

What are some of the key challenges a division chief faces when leading a multidisciplinary team?

A Division Chief often manages teams with diverse professional backgrounds, which can present challenges in aligning goals, communication styles, and work processes. Job description

Division Chief, Gynecologic Oncology About Los Angeles General Medical Center

Los Angeles General Medical Center (LAGMC) is the flagship public hospital of Los Angeles County and one of the largest safety-net hospitals in the United States. With a clinical affiliation through the University of Southern California (USC) Keck School of Medicine, LAGMC sits at the intersection of world-class academic medicine and an unwavering commitment to health equity.

The Opportunity

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Los Angeles General Medical Center is recruiting a Division Chief for Gynecologic Oncology. This is a rare opportunity for a mission-driven physician leader to shape the future of a well-established, high-volume division while directly impacting the lives of a high-risk, vulnerable patient population.

The Division Chief will provide clinical and administrative leadership joining a team of four gynecologic oncologists and three nurse practitioners. The Division Chief will also serve as a key academic leader within the residency and fellowship programs shared with USC, contributing to the training of the next generation of OB/GYN clinicians.

Clinical Practice

The successful candidate will maintain a full-scope gynecologic oncology practice, including:

  • Coordination of care for a high-volume, complex patient population
  • Complex open, minimally invasive, and robotic gynecologic oncology surgery
  • Administration and oversight of cancer-directed systemic therapy
  • Multidisciplinary tumor board participation
Leadership & Education

As Division Chief, the candidate will be expected to:

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for the LAGMC Gynecologic Oncology Division
  • Recruit, develop, and retain division faculty and advanced practice providers
  • Serve as a clinical educator for OB/GYN residents (36) and gynecologic oncology fellows (3)
  • Collaborate with departmental and hospital leadership on quality, safety, and equity initiatives
  • Collaborate with researchers in clinical and observational trials
Why Join Us

This role is for the physician who finds purpose in working with an underserved population for whom resources are limited and the stakes are high. At LAGMC, you will lead a talented and dedicated team, train outstanding residents and fellows, and provide subspecialty cancer care to patients in a large urban setting.

Qualifications
  • MD or equivalent degree with fellowship training in Gynecologic Oncology
  • Board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG)
  • Active California medical license or eligibility to obtain one
  • Demonstrated experience in full-scope gynecologic oncology surgery, including robotic/MIS procedures
  • Prior leadership experience preferred
  • Prior educational experience preferred
  • Deep commitment to caring for underserved, safety-net, and diverse patient populations

Los Angeles General Medical Center is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
