Job description


The primary purpose of the position is to provide direct accommodation services for a veterinary medicine student with a disability. This position supports the student in clinical settings by performing specific tasks under the student's direction to facilitate equal access to veterinary education and clinical training.
Responsibilities
Clinical Access Support:
  • Assist with patient handling, positioning, and maneuvering as directed by the student.
  • Facilitate the student's access to patient care environments and clinical experiences.
  • Assist with physical support tasks necessary for participation in clinical activities, such as moving furniture, equipment, and other items.
  • Assist with transporting supplies, feed, equipment, and other materials needed for clinical activities.
  • Transcribe and format clinical notes as dictated by the student.
  • Assist with documentation-related tasks in clinical record systems as dictated by the student.
  • Follow the student's task-specific instructions while maintaining applicable clinical, safety, and professional standards.
  • Support implementation of approved accommodations without compromising essential learning outcomes or patient care.
  • Adhere to all clinical, safety, infection control, and professional standards of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Administrative and Professional Responsibilities:
  • Attend assigned clinical rotations and patient care activities with the student.
  • Coordinate schedules and communicate with SDS staff, clinical faculty, and the student.
  • Communicate regularly with the student, the Associate Director of Student Disability Services, and designated College of Veterinary Medicine faculty and staff to clarify responsibilities, confirm needs, and report any concerns or barriers.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with institutional policies, accreditation standards, licensing requirements, and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records of hours worked.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Education: This position requires a high school diploma or GED
  • Experience: Large Animal Clinical Sciences: 1 year of relevant experience working with large animals, including but not limited to horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, llamas, and alpacas. Small Animal Clinical Sciences: No experience required.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge: Basic knowledge of veterinary medical terminology, anatomy, and clinical procedures sufficient to follow instructions in a clinical setting; basic knowledge of animal handling, restraint, and safe movement techniques; basic understanding of clinical workflows and equipment used in veterinary teaching or clinical hospital settings; knowledge of confidentiality standards and professional conduct expectations in clinical and educational environments,
  • Skill in: Safely handling, positioning, and assisting with restraint of a variety of animal species under direction; accurately following detailed verbal and written instructions provided by the student; transcribing and formatting clinical documentation and patient records as directed by the student; clear verbal and written communication using appropriate veterinary terminology; using or assisting with basic veterinary clinical equipment under direction; maintaining accuracy and attention to detail in fast-paced clinical environments
  • Ability to: Work in fast-paced clinical environments involving animals, veterinary students, faculty, and staff; adapt to various clinical environments and experiences that may include animal surgeries, injuries, and illnesses; carry out task-specific instructions without exercising independent clinical judgment; follow instructions precisely and adapt to changing clinical schedules and environments; perform physical tasks, including lifting, moving equipment, and assisting with animal positioning; maintain confidentiality and exercise professional discretion at all times; maintain professionalism, patience, and sensitivity when working with individuals with diverse needs and backgrounds; recognize role boundaries and defer clinical decision-making to the directing student; assist with treatments

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience: 1 year of experience working with a variety of species of animals in a clinical, academic, shelter, veterinary practice, veterinary teaching hospital, or academic clinical rotation setting
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge: Basic knowledge of assistive technologies and adaptive tools used by students with disabilities; understanding of higher education clinical training environments and disability accommodation practices; working knowledge of veterinary clinical workflows in a teaching hospital or clinical rotation environment; familiarity with common veterinary diagnostic, treatment, and monitoring procedures; familiarity with veterinary electronic medical record systems and documentation standards
  • Skill in: Advanced animal handling and restraint skills across multiple species and clinical contexts
  • Ability to: Function effectively in high-volume, fast-paced clinical environments with shifting priorities; anticipate potential accessibility challenges; build rapport that fosters a positive, supportive environment for students with diverse needs; remain composed and professional in stressful or emotionally demanding clinical situations; quickly adapt to different clinical services, specialties, and rotation environments
