OSP Fiber Heavy Equipment Operator


Long Haul Fiber Construction — Minneapolis to Chicago Route

Location: Traveling position — project route runs Minneapolis, MN to Chicago, IL

Pay Rate: $25.00 – $35.00/hour

Job Type: Full-Time | Travel Required | Per Diem Available


About the Project:

Our client is performing underground long-haul fiber optic construction along a major route connecting Minneapolis, MN to Chicago, IL. This is large-scale Outside Plant (OSP) construction work requiring experienced heavy equipment operators comfortable running crews across multiple job sites over an extended project timeline.


Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced OSP Fiber Heavy Equipment Operator to operate plows, trenchers, and directional equipment used in underground fiber optic cable installation. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with cable plow units and ditch witch/trenching equipment on long-haul telecom construction projects and is fully prepared for extended travel across the project corridor.


Key Responsibilities

  • Operate cable plows (Bron/Ditch Witch Braun 250 & 175, or comparable) for underground fiber installation
  • Operate trenching equipment (Vermeer and similar ditch witch/trencher units) for conduit and cable placement
  • Read and follow construction prints/staking sheets to determine plow/trench path and depth
  • Coordinate with crew foreman and locate/utility teams to avoid existing underground utilities
  • Perform daily equipment inspections, basic maintenance, and report mechanical issues
  • Maintain safe work practices on active jobsites, roadways, and easements
  • Adjust to varying terrain, weather, and jobsite conditions across the travel route
  • Communicate progress and jobsite conditions to project supervisor


Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Minimum 1–2 years hands-on experience operating fiber/underground utility plows and trenchers
  • Direct experience with Braun 250 and/or 175 plows required
  • Experience with Vermeer trenchers/ditch witch equipment required
  • Prior experience on OSP fiber, telecom, or underground utility construction strongly preferred
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL a plus but not required
  • Ability to read basic construction prints and staking sheets
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and background check


Travel Requirements — Must Read


This is a 100% traveling position. The project route runs from Minneapolis, MN to Chicago, IL, and the crew will relocate along the corridor as work progresses. Candidates must be:

  • Willing and able to travel for the full duration of the project
  • Comfortable staying in lodging provided/covered by per diem during the work week
  • Able to work away from home for extended stretches (confirm rotation schedule with recruiter — e.g., 5/1, 6/1, or similar)

Candidates who are not open to travel should not apply — this is a non-negotiable requirement of the role.


Compensation & Schedule

  • Pay: $25.00–$35.00/hour, based on experience and equipment proficiency
  • Per diem: Provided for lodging/meals while traveling (confirm exact structure with client)
  • Schedule: Full-time; typical OSP construction schedule (confirm hours/days with client — commonly 4x10s or 5x8s, weather dependent)

  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work outdoors for extended periods
