Job Description

The Global Security Operations team at NBCU seeks a energetic and enthusiastic safety and security specialist to support the daily work of NBCUs New's teams across the U.S. This individual will be an integral part of a News Security team committed to delivering holistic support at a standard of excellence for all News personnel and newsgathering activities across the company.

The Director, Security for NBCU will have oversight of security logistics and physical security operations for NBCU News personnel and spaces, including the planning and execution phases of all remote operations. This individual reports directly to the Senior Director of News Security, as part of the Global Security Operations team, working across all News properties.* This individual will manage vendor relationships and ensure the necessary resources, policies, processes, and plans are in place to protect the company's employees, operations, physical property, and intellectual property. This position will deploy extensively with News personnel and will be based out of Los Angeles, California.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work directly with News producers, camera operators, senior executives, talent and local staff on all aspects of the planning and execution of security logistics and operations, including, but not limited to, the planning and execution phase of all news remotes; this includes assessing security needs, securing appropriate vendors, traveling to remotes when required, and conducting post-mortems to identify lessons learned and opportunities for improvement.
  • Assist in the management and coordination of News Security responses to dynamic and large-scale news stories, including coordinating across the team, and supporting a follow-the-sun model when appropriate.  Collaborate and coordinate across the News Security team to ensure a consistent and holistic approach to safety and security.
  • Collaborate with the News Security team to stablish security guidelines and training requirements for News employees; coordinate all necessary security-related training, either as the training facilitator or as a direct liaison with contracted training vendors.
  • Manage confidential and or sensitive information, and professionally, thoughtfully and sensitively provide support or guidance to News personnel and or management who might be navigating high-stress or emotionally difficult situations.
  • Work Closely with the Global Security Operations and the NBCU Cyber Security team to coordinate and advise on News security needs and develop a regular communication rhythm with the NBCU Global Response & Intelligence Center (GRIC) team. Track news deployments and document and report incidents for data gathering and record-keeping purposes, and to facilitate regular monitoring, evaluation and learning to ensure industry-leading support.
  • Assist appropriate News management (HR, Legal, etc.) with investigations when appropriate. Play an active role in representing the Security Department with Business Continuity and Crisis Management teams.
  • Develop and maintain meaningful business relationships with Local and National law enforcement, government emergency response agencies, other news organizations, and other potential safety partners. Direct personal protection support for News senior executives and talent as needed.
  • Provide guidance on the design, development, assessment, and effectiveness of company security policies, as well as training, tools, and resources related to newsgathering safety (e.g. PPE, specialist training, etc.).
  • Develop, plan and execute against continued process optimization and quality improvement initiatives, focused on improving functions, quality, and costs including performance vs. best practice initiatives.
  • Oversee vendors, including contracts, budgets, and invoice processing, and implement security action plans for News teams; coordinate all security vendors who operate remotely for News and ensure that standard operating procedures are fit for purpose, up to date, and adhered to.
Qualifications

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Significant professional experience in media or news security, corporate security, military, law enforcement or similar. Experience in remote, hostile or high-risk environments preferred.
  • Experience managing budgets and stakeholder management, including working with external vendors.
  • Experience with general security concepts and methods such as deployment planning, vulnerability assessments, privacy assessments, intrusion detection, incident response, and security policy creation.
  • Proficient level of written and verbal skills in both English and Spanish is strongly preferred.
  • Must be willing to be on-call and available 24/7 for emergencies
  • Must be willing to travel, as needed, at times on short notice.

Desired Characteristics

  • Security experience in the field of News or Media safety or security.
  • HEFAT (Hostile Environment and First Aid Training) experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting border security, immigration enforcement, intelligence operations, threat assessment, investigations, or emergency response activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess security risks, manage complex incidents, and collaborate with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners.
  • Strong knowledge of trends and emerging threats to journalists and media organizations, particularly in the U.S.
  • Self-starter, who leads with integrity, with strong attention to detail and time management skills.
  • A team player with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a disbursed team.
  • Experience working with senior level executives and/or high-profile talent, particularly related to security.
  • Experience establishing and implementing departmental strategy as well as managing short and long-term projects. Ability to coordinate multiple projects, responsibilities, and deadlines concurrently.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, often with limited information.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
