Job description

From a small family business to a multi-billion-dollar global company, Sonoco has been changing the face of products and packaging since 1899 - all while keeping the heart of "People Build Businesses" alive.
Our talented people are at the core of our growth, constantly reinventing the Sonoco wheel with brilliant solutions every year. Today we are a world leader in global packaging solutions with diversified operations in over 34 countries. We're extremely proud of our portfolio of brands, our achievements in sustainability and industrialization and the groundbreaking work accomplished by our people.
We are seeking a technical and detail-oriented Manager of SEC Reporting to join our Corporate Accounting team. Reporting directly to the Director of SEC Reporting, you will be a key contributor to the external reporting process, ensuring all filings are accurate, compliant, and clearly communicate the company's financial story. This role requires sound professional judgment, strong cross-functional influence, and the ability to lead complex reporting processes in a public company environment. This role requires a strong balance of technical accounting expertise and the ability to draft high-quality Management's Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) and manage complex Non-GAAP reconciliations
What you'll be doing:
  • SEC Filings: Support the Director of SEC Reporting in the end-to-end preparation, review, and filing of quarterly and annual reports.
  • Financial Statements: Draft high-quality financial statements, including consolidated balance sheets, income statements, and statements of cash flows, along with required footnote disclosures.
  • MD&A Ownership: Draft the Management's Discussion and Analysis (MD&A), collaborating with business leaders to provide a clear, concise narrative of the company's financial condition, changes in financial condition, and results of operations.
  • Non-GAAP Compliance: Manage the calculation and reconciliation of Non-GAAP financial measures (e.g., Adjusted EBITDA, Free Cash Flow). Ensure all Non-GAAP disclosures comply with SEC Regulation G and Item 10(e) of Regulation S-K, including the "equal prominence" requirement.
  • Technical Accounting: Research and document the accounting treatment for complex transactions (e.g., stock-based compensation, leases, business combinations, and revenue recognition) and draft corresponding footnote disclosures.
  • XBRL Oversight: Manage the XBRL tagging process to ensure data accuracy and compliance with SEC taxonomy.
  • Internal Controls: Maintain and update documentation for internal controls over financial reporting in compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX).
  • Audit Coordination: Serve as a primary point of contact for external auditors during quarterly reviews and the annual audit.
  • Earnings Support: Serve as a key cross-functional partner with Investor Relations and senior Finance leadership to ensure consistency between SEC filings and the earnings releases, executive scripts, and investor presentations.
  • Process Leadership: Drive continuous improvement in SEC reporting processes, timelines, and documentation to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and audit readiness.
  • Team Development: Provide guidance and informal mentoring to senior accountants or analysts supporting the SEC reporting process, fostering technical excellence and strong documentation standards.

This is a hybrid position and is available locally in either our Corporate satellite office in beautiful Charlotte, NC or our Corporate headquarters in Hartsville, SC, which is close to exciting destinations (Myrtle Beach, SC Charleston, SC, Columbia, SC and Charlotte, NC). Relocation assistance is provided.
We'd love to hear from you if:
  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting
  • Certification: Active CPA license is required
  • Experience: 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant experience in SEC reporting or Big 4 public accounting
  • SEC Expertise: Deep understanding of U.S. GAAP and Regulations S-X, and S-K, with specific expertise in the disclosure requirements for Non-GAAP financial measures.
  • Writing Skills: Exceptional written communication skills with the ability to draft complex financial narratives (MD&A) for a sophisticated investor audience
  • Software: Proficiency in an SEC reporting platform (preferably Workiva) and advanced Excel skills.
  • Proven ability to meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced, high-pressure public company environment.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to bridge the gap between "the numbers" and "the story."
  • Experience with complex global consolidations and multi-entity structures.

Compensation:
The annual base salary range for this role is from $138,320 to $155,610, plus an annual target bonus of 12.5% of base salary. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
