Position Summary

The Director, Performance Engineering is a strategic leader responsible for transforming the Performance Engineering function into a best-in-class, customer-centric organization.

Reporting to the VP โ€“ Performance Optimization, this role goes beyond traditional performance analysis. It is about elevating the team into trusted advisorsโ€”delivering not just data, but actionable insights, forward-looking guidance, and meaningful recommendations that drive customer success. Todayโ€™s opportunity is to rethink and modernize performance engineering by building scalable tools, automation, and reporting capabilities that free the team from manual, repetitive work and enable them to operate as true advisors.

This leader will champion a culture of responsiveness, innovation, and continuous improvementโ€”leveraging digital tools, modern analytics, and strong leadership to build a high-performing, customer-minded team. The ideal candidate is energized by change, motivated to develop people, and passionate about delivering exceptional customer experiences.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Leadership & Impact

  • Serve as a strategic partner to customers by delivering insightful, actionable, and timely performance guidanceโ€”not just reports.
  • Elevate the teamโ€™s role from data providers to trusted advisors and subject matter experts.
  • Drive a culture of responsiveness focused on clarity, value, and customer outcomes.
  • Build and strengthen long-term customer relationships through credibility, communication, and expertise.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of Performance Engineers.
  • Inspire and mentor team members, with a strong focus on developing junior talent and future leaders.
  • Build a customer-first mindset across the team, aligning technical work with customer needs and business impact.
  • Foster an environment of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.

Operational Excellence & Delivery

  • Ensure consistent, high-quality service delivery across all Performance Engineering activities.
  • Oversee performance modeling, analytics, and reporting for utility-scale PV and BESS assets.
  • Ensure contractual obligations (performance guarantees, availability, reporting) are met with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Develop scalable processes, tools, and frameworks to improve efficiency, consistency, and quality.

Automation, Tools & Reporting Transformation

  • Lead the modernization of performance engineering workflows by designing and implementing automation, advanced reporting, and scalable data solutions.
  • Identify and eliminate manual, repetitive tasks to significantly improve team efficiency and capacity.
  • Build and deploy tools that enable faster, more insightful analysis and decision-making.
  • Redesign reporting to deliver clearer, more meaningful insights to customers while reducing internal effort.
  • Create the operational foundation that allows engineers to spend more time advising customers and less time producing reports.

Innovation & Digital Enablement

  • Champion the adoption of digital tools, advanced analytics, and automation across the team.
  • Continuously evolve methodologies to improve insight generation and customer value.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends in data, analytics, and performance optimization.

Strategic & Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Partner with Sales to support contract structuring, performance guarantees, and service offerings.
  • Lead onboarding of new contracts to ensure seamless service delivery from day one.
  • Collaborate across functions to align performance engineering with broader business goals.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, or related field (advanced degree preferred).
  • 10+ years of experience in engineering, analytics, or performance-related roles (energy industry experience preferred but not required).
  • 5+ years of experience leading and developing technical teams.
  • Proven track record of building strong customer relationships and delivering high-value insights.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through change and drive organizational improvement.
  • Experience working in matrixed organizations.
  • Industry experience including Solar, Renewable Energy, and/or Software is preferred.

Technical & Analytical Skills

  • Strong data and analytics background with the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights.
  • Experience with analytics tools and programming languages (e.g., SQL, Python, MATLAB) preferred.
  • Familiarity with performance modeling tools (e.g., PVsyst, PlantPredict) is a plus, but not required.

What Weโ€™re Looking For

  • A leader who is energized by building, improving, and transforming teams.
  • A customer-first mindset with a passion for delivering meaningful valueโ€”not just outputs.
  • A coach and mentor who develops people and elevates those around them.
  • A forward-thinker who embraces digital tools and innovation.
  • Someone who brings energy, accountability, and inspiration to their work.

Additional Information

  • Travel: ~15%
