Job description

Job Summary:
The Power Electronics Engineer is responsible for driving project delivery overseeing the full lifecycle of Pulsed Power products and solutions-from concept through development, enhancement, testing, and support-ensuring they meet performance, reliability, cost, and compliance standards.
This role focuses on converting and controlling electrical energy efficiently using technologies such as converters, inverters, rectifiers, and switching power supplies.
You will work closely with internal teams and external partners to define technical needs, troubleshoot design challenges, and ensure quality through structured testing and risk management.
Key Accountabilities:
Product Development and Technical Innovation
  • Work with internal and external key stakeholders to define specifications and scope of requirements for related projects and solutions
  • Identify opportunities for improvement/enhancement to current product design
  • Lead/participate with failure/RCA investigations
  • Design and deliver timely, cost-effective solutions with a focus on functionality and reliability supported by comprehensive testing and validation practices
  • Specify, procure, and evaluate new components or technology to be applied or integrated into existing products and solutions
  • Collect, analyze, interpret, and present field and bench testing data

Cross-Functional Collaboration - Technical/Customer Support
  • Provide technical support to both internal and external customers (eg training and troubleshooting)
  • Support the sales and life cycle of BlueSparkยฎ product and solution offerings in collaboration with all levels and departments to capture user needs, identify challenges, and implement improvements

Documentation, Compliance & Industry Engagement
  • Create, review, revise and maintain all required documentation, specifications, and schematics to ensure accuracy and compliance with quality management systems (QMS)
  • Develop and maintain technical knowledge by monitoring relevant and emerging technologies and trends and through participation in key industry events/conferences/committees

Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Power Electronics; eligible for P.Eng. registration (APEGA)
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in power electronics design and development
  • Strong understanding of power converter topologies
  • Strong experience in design and development of power electronic circuits
  • Strong expertise in H-bridge converter design and analysis
  • Strong expertise in embedded firmware development (MCU/DSP), including real-time control and hardware interfacing
  • Deep understanding of signal processing algorithms (implementation and optimization)
  • Deep knowledge of switching devices (MOSFET, IGBT, SiC, GaN)
  • Knowledge of EMI mitigation, grounding, thermal performance, and PCB layout
  • Ability to design for high efficiency, high power density, and thermal performance
  • Experience with simulation tools (MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, SPICE)
  • Hands-on experience building, testing, debugging, and validating prototypes
  • Python development skills
  • Experience supporting production, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement
  • Working knowledge of industry regulations and standards (IEEE, ANSI, CSA, NEC)
  • Experience with tool design for downhole and high-voltage environments is an asset
  • Intermediate+ proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, SharePoint, Zoom, and collaboration tools
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screening and maintain eligibility for international travel
