Director Performance Engineering information

How does a director of performance engineering typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive system optimization?

A Director of Performance Engineering frequently works closely with software development, operations, and product teams to identify performance bottlenecks and implement solutions. They lead performance reviews, set benchmarks, and coordinate testing strategies to ensure systems meet business requirements. Regular communication and joint troubleshooting sessions are common, as the role requires balancing technical needs with business priorities. This collaborative approach helps ensure that performance goals are aligned across the organization and that issues are resolved efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director of performance engineering?

To thrive as a Director of Performance Engineering, you need deep expertise in software performance optimization, systems architecture, and a strong background in computer science or a related field, often with advanced degrees or equivalent experience. Familiarity with performance testing tools (such as JMeter, LoadRunner), monitoring platforms (like New Relic, Dynatrace), and cloud infrastructure is typically required, along with certifications in relevant technologies. Exceptional leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and strategic problem-solving abilities make candidates stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for driving high-performing teams, ensuring system reliability, and delivering scalable solutions that support business objectives.

What does a director of performance engineering do?

A Director of Performance Engineering leads teams responsible for ensuring that software, systems, or applications perform optimally and efficiently at scale. They set performance goals, develop testing strategies, and oversee the identification and resolution of bottlenecks. This role involves collaborating with engineering, operations, and product teams to build robust, high-performing solutions. Additionally, they provide technical leadership, mentor team members, and define best practices for performance testing and monitoring.

What is the difference between Director Performance Engineering vs Performance Engineer?

AspectDirector Performance EngineeringPerformance Engineer
ResponsibilitiesOversees performance testing strategies, manages teams, and aligns performance goals with business objectives.Conducts performance testing, analyzes system performance, and reports findings to improve application efficiency.
Required SkillsLeadership, project management, advanced performance testing expertise, and strategic planning.Technical performance testing skills, scripting, and performance analysis.
Work EnvironmentSenior management, cross-functional teams, strategic planning sessions.Technical teams, testing labs, development environments.

The main difference is that the Director Performance Engineering leads and strategizes performance initiatives at an organizational level, while the Performance Engineer focuses on executing performance tests and analyzing system performance. The director role involves leadership and planning, whereas the performance engineer role is more technical and hands-on.

Description

Director of Engineering

Orbion is seeking a Director of Engineering who will report to the Chief Technology Officer. The Director is responsible for execution of Orbion's Product Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering activities.ย  Given strategic direction from the CTO, the Director will have the responsibility to develop and deliver products and systems on-time and on-budget, and to provide the sustaining engineering required over the full product or system lifecycle.ย ย  To achieve this, the Director will manage functional requirements, staffing, resource planning, recruiting, training, talent development, engagement, and retention of employees.ย  ย This position requires attention to detail, the ability to compile and organize data from multiple internal/external sources, to synthesize the data to create schedules/plans and, ultimately, coordinate with other leadership to prioritize, lead, manage, and share staff. Demonstrated experience leading engineering organizations in spacecraft or other aerospace/defense industries is desired, but equivalent engineering leadership experience in non-aerospace environments is also qualifying. The ideal candidate has strong interpersonal skills, is self-motivated, and driven by a fast-paced, exciting, and collaborative work environment.ย  ย

Responsibilities:ย ย

  • Manage and develop a growing team that is currently approximately 30 mechanical, electrical, software, and system engineersย
  • Actively participate in strategic project planning and prioritization of effortsย
  • Work with the CTO to develop technical roadmapsย
  • Work with the CTO to identify and enforce engineering prioritiesย
  • Report progress against plans to CTO and internal executive leadershipย
  • Reinforce a culture of innovation, creative and collaborative problem solvingย
  • Identify and deploy processes and practices to improve team effectiveness and communicationย
  • Work across departments, especially manufacturing, to transition products from concept to productionย
  • Plan and ensure sufficient labor/resource capacity and capability are available to meet the business forecastย ย
  • Establish performance expectations, methods, and tools for the teamsย
  • Support training and career development for the teamsย
  • Other duties as assignedย ย

Minimum Requirements:ย ย

  • Must meet the definition of a United States Personย
  • 10+ years of experience with engineering, management, monitoring activities, and collaboration with other staff/leadershipย
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics or directly related degreeย
  • Experience in a product development and/or production environmentย
  • Proven ability to lead small- to medium-sized engineering teamsย
  • Great communication skills, technical depth, and breadth across multiple engineering disciplinesย
  • Willingness to travel on occasion (5%)ย

Preferred Qualifications:ย

  • 15+ years of experience with development and production programs in aerospace, defense, or medical industriesย
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following technical areas: space hardware design, aerospace production, electronic design, electronics manufacturing, or aerospace systems engineering.ย
  • Familiarity with common spaceflight hardware designs and issuesย
  • Technical or management experience in multiple engineering disciplinesย
  • Demonstrated experience working with in-house manufacturing that is producing a product at scaleย
  • Solid understanding of applicable engineering principles, business practices, and experience working in production facilitiesย
  • Proven experience with engineering management toolsย

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS: Enjoy a very competitive starting salary based on your knowledge and experience. In addition to the excitement of making monumental changes to the aerospace industry, employees enjoy a flexible work schedule, company paid health insurance, dental, vision, prescription drug coverage, paid time off (vacation, paid holidays, sick days), contribution matching retirement plan, short-term disability coverage, and life insurance coverage. The position is full-time and located in Houghton, MI. Relocation assistance is available.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, color, religion, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, age, or any other characteristic protected by state or local law.
