What does a director of user experience do?

A Director of User Experience (UX) leads and oversees the design and improvement of a company's digital products and services to ensure they are intuitive, user-friendly, and meet customer needs. This role involves managing UX teams, collaborating with stakeholders, establishing design strategies, and ensuring consistency in user experience across platforms. Directors of UX analyze user research and feedback, set design standards, and drive the overall vision for UX within the organization.

What does a director of user experience do?

As a director of user experience, your primary job is to lead your company's UX department as your staff members design and test software. You provide feedback on visual and creative elements of the process with the aim of making things as user-friendly as possible. You also spend time researching within the field, creating consumer scenarios to test products against, and collaborating with other departments to find the most effective way to improve products. You may spend most of your time with product strategy and product design personnel. Since director of user experience is a leadership position, you may end up delegating some of your duties so that you can focus on leading the department.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director of user experience?

To thrive as a Director of User Experience, you need deep expertise in UX design, user research, and leadership, usually supported by a relevant degree and extensive experience in digital product design. Familiarity with design systems, prototyping tools (such as Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD), and analytics platforms is typically required. Outstanding communication, strategic thinking, and team management skills set exceptional candidates apart. These competencies ensure the creation of impactful, user-centered products that align with business goals and foster high-performing teams.

How does a director of user experience typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

A Director of User Experience (UX) often works closely with cross-functional teams such as product management, engineering, marketing, and customer support to ensure a cohesive and effective user experience. They facilitate workshops, lead design reviews, and advocate for user-centered design principles throughout the product development lifecycle. This role requires strong communication and leadership skills to align diverse stakeholders around UX goals, resolve conflicts, and ensure that user insights are integrated into strategic decisions. Collaboration is key, as the Director of UX must bridge gaps between departments and champion the voice of the user at every stage.

Job description

About Nexus

You don't have an AI story if you don't have your data story. That's where NexusOne comes in.

We're the converged data platform for the AI era โ€” composable by design, built on an open-source foundation, and AI-native from the ground up. One identity, one governance envelope, one operational layer across every mainframe, data lake, warehouse, and streaming system in the business. For the first time, enterprises can bring their existing stack along instead of rebuilding it โ€” and still give AI agents full context across the estate.

What we stand for is simple: sovereign data, interoperable systems, decoupled intelligence โ€” delivered the way modern software should be. No rip-and-replace. No multi-year transformation. Our CEO Anu Jain puts it well: we turn the "ball of yarn" of data integrations into a unified engine โ€” less like assembling car parts, more like buying the car ready to drive. 85+ open-source tools pre-integrated. AI-native automations that deploy and self-heal the stack without human toil. Forward-deployed engineers who build shoulder-to-shoulder with customer teams โ€” hands on keyboards, not just on decks.

It's working, and fast. We're tripling revenue year over year, backed by Insight Partners, and running in production in environments most vendors won't touch. Our platform processes credit risk data for 90%+ of US small businesses โ€” 40M+ โ€” every month. Intent signals for 300M+ subscribers monthly for Africa's largest telco. The data and AI layer for a Top 3 US bank.

We're 100+ people across the US and India, headquartered in Atlanta. We think big, move fast, and don't mistake activity for progress. We hire people who'd rather ship the rocket than brief someone on it.

Key responsibilitiesStrategy & product experience leadership
  • Define and evolve the enterprise UX strategy aligned to NexusOneโ€™s product direction and customer needs.
  • Lead holistic experience design across surfaces (navigation, workflows, settings/admin, data-heavy screens, onboarding).
  • Establish UX principles and quality bars; drive consistency across teams and features.
User research & customer discovery
  • Create an early-stage research program: interview plans, usability testing, feedback loops with Customer Success and Support.
  • Synthesize insights into clear priorities and narratives that influence roadmap decisions.
  • Build a research repository and ensure learnings are discoverable and actionable.
Design execution (hands-on)
  • Produce high-quality design artifacts (flows, wireframes, prototypes, UI specs) and work directly with engineers through build.
  • Run working sessions with Product/Engineering to de-risk complex problems and converge on solutions.
  • Ensure accessibility and inclusive design practices are baked into the process.
Design system & standards
  • Establish or mature a design system (components, tokens, patterns, usage guidance) with a pragmatic adoption plan.
  • Partner with Engineering on front-end architecture implications (component libraries, theming, performance, maintainability).
Team building & operating model
  • Hire, mentor, and develop designers and (as needed) researchers/content design.
  • Define how UX engages with Product and Engineering: intake, prioritization, design reviews, handoffs, and acceptance criteria.
  • Establish cross-functional metrics and a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
Collaboration model

You will partner closely with:

  • Product leadership: clarify problems worth solving, define outcomes, and sequence roadmap.
  • Engineering leadership: integrate design into delivery; ensure the UX strategy is feasible and scalable.
  • Customer Success / Support: identify pain points, validate improvements, reduce friction and tickets.
  • Security/Compliance stakeholders (as applicable): ensure enterprise expectations are met (roles/permissions, auditability, data handling UX).
Required qualifications
  • 8+ years in product design/UX (or equivalent), including experience leading design for enterprise / B2B software.
  • Proven ability to operate as a founding or early-stage UX leader (0โ†’1), building process and influence from scratch.
  • Strong product thinking: frames problems, defines hypotheses, prioritizes ruthlessly, and measures outcomes.
  • Demonstrated excellence designing complex, data-heavy workflows (admin/ops, dashboards, configuration, permissions, multi-step tasks).
  • Fluency in modern design tooling (e.g., Figma) and prototyping; strong communication of rationale and trade-offs.
  • Experience partnering deeply with engineering teams; understands implementation constraints and can ship iteratively.
  • Ability to lead ambiguity: makes progress without perfect inputs; creates clarity for others.
Preferred qualifications
  • Experience creating or scaling a design system in partnership with engineering.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG) and building accessible component libraries.
  • Background designing for reliability/operability features (audit logs, RBAC, alerts, incident workflows) or platform products.
  • Experience with customer-facing incident/operational workflows where clarity and trust matter.
Why Youโ€™ll Love Working at Nexus

At Nexus, we value people who want to grow โ€” and support each other while doing so.

You can expect:

  • A collaborative team culture built on curiosity and respect
  • Challenging work where your contributions clearly matter
  • A leadership team that invests in learning and development
  • The opportunity to work at the intersection of cloud, data, and AI innovation
