Position Summary
The Director of the Out-of-School (OOS) Program provides leadership, planning, and daily oversight for a high-quality youth program that operates after school during the academic year and as a full-day summer program. This role is responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment for students in kindergarten through 8th grade while supervising staff, managing program operations, building family and school partnerships, and ensuring compliance with Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) requirements and all applicable licensing, health, and safety standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead the overall planning, implementation, and evaluation of the OOS program for after-school enrichment during the academic year and full-day summer programming.
  • Design and oversee age-appropriate academic support, enrichment, recreation, social-emotional learning, and youth development activities for students in kindergarten through 8th grade.
  • Ensure a safe, structured, and welcoming environment that supports positive behavior, student engagement, and family trust.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate program staff and volunteers.
  • Develop staff schedules and site coverage plans that maintain proper supervision, ratio expectations, and smooth program operations.
  • Collaborate with school personnel, families, and community partners to support student success and strengthen program participation.
  • Oversee student enrollment, attendance, transportation coordination as applicable, and family communication.
  • Develop and maintain program calendars, activity plans, field trip plans, and special events for both the school year and summer sessions.
  • Manage program supplies, equipment, and learning materials to ensure readiness and quality experiences for participants.
  • Monitor program quality through observations, feedback, and data collection; implement improvements as needed.
  • Support budget tracking, purchasing, recordkeeping, and reporting in alignment with organizational policies and funding requirements.
  • Prepare reports, updates, and presentations related to program performance, participation, and outcomes.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to incidents, parent concerns, and operational issues.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • This position requires regular evening and weekend availability to support program operations, trainings, events, meetings, and organizational needs.
CACFP and Compliance Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily implementation of CACFP meal and snack service in accordance with USDA, state, and organizational requirements.
  • Ensure accurate meal counts, attendance records, production records, menus, and other required CACFP documentation are completed and maintained.
  • Coordinate with kitchen, food service, or designated staff to ensure meals and snacks meet program meal pattern requirements and are served on approved schedules.
  • Train and monitor staff on CACFP procedures, meal service requirements, civil rights expectations, sanitation, and documentation practices.
  • Support site readiness for reviews, audits, and monitoring visits; address corrective actions in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Ensure the program remains compliant with licensing, health and safety regulations, emergency procedures, and child supervision requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in education, child development, social work, recreation, nonprofit management, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in youth development, after-school programming, childcare, summer programming, or a related setting.
  • Supervisory experience preferred, including staff leadership, coaching, and performance management.
  • Knowledge of child and youth development for elementary and middle school students.
  • Experience with program planning, family engagement, and community partnership building.
  • Knowledge of CACFP, licensed childcare operations, and health and safety requirements preferred.
  • Strong organizational, communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with basic computer systems, recordkeeping, email, and reporting tools.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain within a required timeframe.
  • Successful completion of background checks and all required trainings.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
This position requires the ability to actively supervise children indoors and outdoors, move throughout program spaces, lift and carry program materials, and participate in recreational activities, field trips, and emergency response procedures as needed. The Director must be able to maintain a dependable schedule that supports after-school hours during the school year and full-day operational needs during the summer.
