Job description

Overview

Responsible for providing leadership to the Preconstruction team, setting strategy and standards for execution planning and phase gate governance portfolio. This position is accountable for delivering consistent, high-quality and executable delivery plans by partnering with executive and senior leaders of various internal departments. Additionally, oversees resourcing and capability development for the preconstruction team; establishes operating rhythms, metrics, and dashboards to drive performance and continuous improvement; provides resources to perform execution planning on projects when/if Operational resources are unavailable and ensures a disciplined handoff from Estimating and to Operations at the appropriate times. The Director of Preconstruction is expected to escalate material commercial, contractual, and execution risks, and provides decisive leadership to resolve cross-functional issues impacting profit, schedule, and customer commitments.

Location: This position can be located at any of our office locations: Phoenix, AZ; Clinton, IN; Indianapolis, IN; Centennial, CO; Irving, TX; or Fargo, ND. Based on the experience and skillset of the individual identified, we are open to a remote-based role with ability to travel to our office and field site locations to support events or department activities.

Responsibilities
  • Model, promote, and enforce all safety policies and procedures, ensuring safe planning and execution during pursuit and project start-up activities
  • Drive quality planning and review rigor so scope, assumptions, and execution plans are complete and right the first time
  • Recruit, develop, and retain high-performing preconstruction talent; build succession plans and role clarity across the team
  • Establish group reporting cadence, dashboards, and data governance standards to provide accurate, decision-ready insights to executive leadership and other key stakeholders
  • Promote a culture of integrity, accountability, and respectful collaboration across all teams
  • Lead clear, solutions-oriented communication to align on scope, schedule, and risk
  • Own and govern preconstruction standard work (execution planning, constructability, and phase gate reviews)
  • Drive continuous improvement and adoption across operating entities
  • Provide functional leadership across a distributed preconstruction organization and matrixed operational resources; set objectives, clarify decision rights, and hold teams accountable for results
  • Coach and mentor team members to strengthen technical depth, leadership capability, and cross-functional influence
  • Assess organizational structure, workload, and resource plans; implement improvements to increase efficiency and effectiveness while supporting employee growth
  • Support the Senior Vice President by contributing to annual plans and advising on preconstruction capability, staffing, and performance
  • Develop, implement, and maintain standard procedures and controls within Preconstruction to improve consistency and operating entity performance
  • Build credibility as a trusted partner by diagnosing business challenges and driving practical, cost- and schedule-aware solutions
  • Provide technical and professional guidance to strengthen pursuit quality and start-up readiness
  • Sponsor and lead initiatives, tools, and standard work to improve estimating accuracy, execution planning quality, phase gate discipline, and portfolio predictability
  • Own departmental budgeting and forecasting; manage spend and staffing plans, track performance to plan, and recommend corrective actions to meet annual operating objectives

Qualifications

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 10+ years of construction industry experience such as estimating, project controls, project planning, and/or construction management (renewables preferred)
  • Demonstrated leadership across multiple projects/programs
  • Previous solar construction experience preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership experience building and leading teams and influencing executive, cross-functional stakeholders in a matrix environment

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
