About the Opportunity

Brown Technology Innovations is a team of dedicated professionals committed to fostering an entrepreneurial culture within the health and biomedical sectors at Brown University, Brown University Health, and Care New England.Under this cooperative, upcoming new investments in technology transfer initiatives will help health system-based researchers turn their discoveries into real-world applications for patients. Reporting to the Senior Director of Business Development โ€“ Life Sciences, the Director will play an integral role in supporting these new initiatives to integrate and align innovation efforts across all three parties.In this role, the Director serves two key stakeholder groups:

  • Faculty and staff inventors responsible for creating innovative technologies.
  • Industry partnersโ€”including investors, entrepreneurs, and companiesโ€”focused on commercializing those technologies.
Major responsibilities include:
  • Technology evaluation & intellectual property management
  • Deal sourcing, negotiations & execution

The Director must demonstrate expertise in technology evaluation, intellectual property (IP) protection, and the sourcing, negotiation, and execution of transactions across life sciences fields such as therapeutics, diagnostics, and health information technology.

Education and Experience
  • Advanced degree required (MD and/or PhD preferred)
  • Ideally, a minimum 10 years of experience in academic research, business development, innovation management, or technology commercialization.
  • Experience working with or within academic medical centers is a plus.
Job Competencies
  • Strong aptitude in patent prosecution and a genuine interest in early-stage technologies and emerging markets.
  • Advanced written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to convey complex technical, legal, and financial concepts.
  • Deep understanding of licensing structures, valuation models, and negotiation strategies for IP and sponsored research agreements.
  • Well-developed network of investors, entrepreneurs, and business development professionals in the life sciences sector.
  • Ability to work independently, analyze complex policy issues, and follow through with minimal oversight.
  • Proven ability to engage effectively with diverse internal and external constituencies across all organizational levels.
  • While this role is hybrid, there is an expectation that the Director will be in-person a minimum of 2-3 days per week.
