JOB SUMMARY:

The Utah Mammoth Television Director is an experienced hockey director and collaborative production leader responsible for the live visual execution of Utah Mammoth television broadcasts.


The Television Director will unify camera coverage, technical execution, storytelling, pacing, replay integration, and emotional moments to deliver seamless, engaging productions that elevate the Mammoth viewer experience.


The position works closely with the Head of Broadcasting, producers, technical crews, on-air talent, and organizational stakeholders to execute broadcasts aligned with Utah Mammoth and Smith Entertainment Group standards, values, philosophies, and production objectives.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Direct all Utah Mammoth games available for local team production, including approximately four preseason games, up to 84 regular-season games, and every available first-round playoff game.
  • Travel with the team and direct both home and road game productions.
  • Direct home-game pregame and postgame programming.
  • Lead unified camera coverage and shot selection that clearly captures gameplay, strategy, personality, atmosphere, and emotion.
  • Collaborate with producers to establish the visual storytelling, pacing, tone, and structure of each broadcast.
  • Provide clear, decisive communication to the technical director, camera operators, replay team, graphics, audio, talent, and other production personnel.
  • Lead technical and live-production crews before, during, and after broadcasts.
  • Participate in production planning, crew calls, pregame meetings, technical preparation, and rehearsals.
  • Anticipate developing storylines and adjust coverage in real time to capture critical moments on and off the ice.
  • Evaluate, plan, test, and implement new broadcast technologies and production concepts, coordinating with technical directors, vendors, and production crews well in advance of game day to ensure unique workflows are clearly understood, technically sound, and successfully executed.
  • Review completed broadcasts and identify opportunities to improve execution, consistency, creativity, and production quality.
  • Provide ongoing crew training, performance feedback, evaluations, and staffing recommendations.
  • Help establish consistent directing standards, workflows, camera assignments, and communication practices throughout the season.
  • Build productive relationships with the production team, broadcast talent, hockey operations, marketing, community relations, ownership, and external production partners.
  • Maintain a calm, prepared, collaborative, and solutions-oriented environment during high-pressure live productions.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of five years of experience directing professional hockey broadcasts.
  • Extensive live sports directing experience from a mobile production unit or television production truck.
  • Strong technical knowledge of live broadcast systems, workflows, equipment, and production positions.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with 1080p, HDR, SMPTE ST 2110, remote production, and cloud-production workflows.
  • Advanced understanding of hockey coverage, including camera placement, line changes, special teams, replay opportunities, officiating, crowd reaction, and developing game stories.
  • Ability to lead large technical and production crews through clear, concise, and respectful communication.
  • Ability to make immediate creative and technical decisions under pressure.
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, holidays, preseason games, regular-season games, and first-round playoff broadcasts.
  • Ability to travel for approximately half of the assigned broadcast schedule.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous NHL directing experience.
  • Experience directing NHL pregame, postgame, studio, or playoff programming.
  • Experience developing crews and implementing consistent production standards across a full season.
  • Experience integrating emerging broadcast technologies, alternate productions, enhanced data, tracking systems, or customized viewing experiences.

This individual will help unify the production team, optimize broadcast execution, implement innovative production concepts, and consistently elevate the experience of Mammoth viewers.
