What is the role of a hospitality director?

The duties of a hospitality director are to ensure a positive experience for guests in hotels, resorts, restaurants, sports stadiums, event venues, or other leisure facilities. As hospitality careers can range from hotels to cruise ships, your responsibilities depend on your employer. Often, a hospitality director ensures the quality of food and beverage service, arranges catering for special events, and works with clients to organize experiences, events, or services. In short, you ensure that the venue meets guests' expectations and needs. A hospitality director may work with a sales team to attract new clients to their facilities.

What does a director of hospitality do?

A Director of Hospitality oversees all aspects of hospitality operations, including guest services, food and beverage, housekeeping, and event coordination. They are responsible for ensuring exceptional guest experiences, maintaining high service standards, and managing staff across multiple departments. Additionally, Directors of Hospitality develop and implement policies, manage budgets, and work closely with other executives to achieve business goals and profitability. Their role is crucial in establishing the reputation and success of hotels, resorts, or hospitality venues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director of hospitality?

To thrive as a Director of Hospitality, you need a comprehensive background in hotel or restaurant management, financial acumen, and a degree in hospitality or business administration. Familiarity with property management systems (PMS), revenue management tools, and relevant certifications such as CHA (Certified Hotel Administrator) is often required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills enable you to motivate teams and deliver outstanding guest experiences. These skills are crucial for optimizing operations, ensuring guest satisfaction, and driving business growth in a competitive industry.

How does a director of hospitality typically collaborate with other department heads to enhance guest experience?

A Director of Hospitality works closely with department heads such as Food & Beverage, Housekeeping, Front Office, and Sales to ensure seamless service delivery. Regular coordination meetings and cross-departmental initiatives are common, as they help align goals and address guest feedback efficiently. This collaborative approach enables swift problem-solving and fosters a unified culture focused on guest satisfaction. By maintaining open communication channels and encouraging teamwork, the Director of Hospitality ensures that all departments contribute to a consistent and elevated guest experience.

Job description

Director of Business Development – Lighting & Home Products

A new lighting technology. A patented product line. A chance to help build the U.S. market.

Are you a Business Development leader who already knows the lighting industry and has the relationships, market knowledge, and sales experience to successfully introduce new products?

Do you enjoy turning an innovative product into real revenue?

Would you like to work directly with the CEO of an established consumer products company that has spent decades in the home décor space with new patented technology?

We're looking for someone who understands the U.S. lighting market and home decor, knows how to create opportunities from scratch,  and can help determine where this new technology belongs and how to get it there. If you're excited about being on the front end of something new and want the opportunity to directly impact how an innovative lighting product enters the U.S. market, click "Apply" today.

Your Bright Future:

  • Compensation: $90,000–$125,000 base DOE
  • Additional bonus/commission opportunity tied to sales goals
  • Orange County, CA based company
  • High-visibility role reporting directly to the CEO
  • Opportunity to help launch and grow an entirely new patented lighting product line
  • Work closely with executive leadership, operations, product strategy, and marketing
  • Entrepreneurial environment where you'll have significant influence over U.S. business development
  • Approximately 20%+ travel for customers, industry events, trade shows, and market development

Where You'll Shine:

As Director of Business Development, you'll take the lead in developing the U.S. market for a new patented lighting technology.

You'll be responsible for identifying where the biggest opportunities are, getting in front of the right decision-makers, developing relationships, and converting those opportunities into long-term business.

  • Develop and execute the U.S. business development strategy for new lighting product lines
  • Build a pipeline from the ground up through proactive outreach, networking, referrals, industry relationships, and market activity
  • Identify and pursue opportunities across lighting, home décor, hospitality, design, distribution, wholesale, and other relevant commercial channels
  • Develop relationships with lighting distributors, showrooms, designers, specifiers, hospitality groups, retailers, builders, and other strategic partners
  • Introduce new patented lighting products and clearly communicate their value, differentiation, and market potential
  • Identify potential strategic partnerships and creative routes to market beyond traditional sales channels
  • Own opportunities from initial introduction through presentation, negotiation, close, and ongoing relationship development
  • Develop proposals, sales programs, pricing recommendations, and presentations based on customer and market needs
  • Establish sales goals, pipeline expectations, forecasts, and business development priorities
  • Bring real-time market feedback to leadership and the product team to help guide positioning, product development, pricing, and future opportunities
  • Represent the company at lighting industry trade shows, conferences, customer meetings, and other market events
  • Work directly with the CEO, VP of Operations, and Product Innovation/Market Strategy leadership to successfully commercialize new products

What You Bring to the Light:

  • 5+ years of successful B2B sales or business development experience
  • Direct lighting industry sales experience required
  • Strong knowledge of the U.S. lighting market and how lighting products are sold, specified, distributed, and brought to market
  • Proven ability to generate new business rather than relying solely on existing accounts or inbound opportunities
  • Experience launching or introducing new lighting products into the marketplace
  • Established relationships within the lighting industry strongly preferred
  • Experience developing business with distributors, showrooms, designers, specifiers, hospitality groups, retailers, builders, or other relevant channels
  • Strong understanding of sales pipelines, forecasting, pricing, negotiation, and revenue goals
  • Comfortable working independently and building a new business channel without an established playbook
  • Strong presentation and relationship-building skills with the ability to communicate directly with senior decision-makers
  • Comfortable working closely with a CEO and executive leadership team
  • Ability to travel approximately 20%+ as needed

Your Extra Spark:

  • Decorative, architectural, ambient, premium, or specialty lighting experience
  • Experience bringing an entirely new product or technology into the lighting market
  • Existing U.S. lighting industry relationships and network
  • Experience with premium home décor, furnishings, hospitality, architectural products, or related consumer categories
  • Experience working with new or disruptive technologies where the market and sales strategy were still being developed
  • Trade show and industry-event experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, or a related field preferred
