Job description

We are looking for an experienced Controller to lead core accounting operations and provide reliable financial insight that supports organizational decision-making for a healthcare organization in Manhattan, Kansas. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate records, strengthening internal controls, and delivering timely reporting for leadership and board stakeholders. Responsibilities:

• Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including payables and related financial activities, to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to policy and accounting standards.

• Direct monthly and annual closing activities by managing timelines, reviewing journal entries, and resolving accounting issues that could affect reporting deadlines.

• Maintain a well-structured general ledger by ensuring transactions are recorded correctly, accounts are classified appropriately, and accounting frameworks remain organized and effective.

• Lead the preparation and review of balance sheet reconciliations across key accounts such as cash, receivables, payables, accrued expenses, and fixed assets, and address discrepancies promptly.

• Produce monthly and annual financial reports, schedules, and analysis for executive leadership and board-level audiences with a focus on accuracy and clarity.

• Monitor financial results, evaluate trends and variances, and recommend corrective actions or process improvements that strengthen overall financial performance.

• Establish, refine, and enforce accounting policies, internal controls, and segregation of duties to protect assets and support dependable financial reporting.

• Serve as the primary contact for the annual audit by coordinating auditor requests, preparing supporting documentation, and following through on audit recommendations.

• Manage cost reporting, fixed asset accounting, cash and banking activity, and cash flow forecasting to support compliance, liquidity, and long-term planning.

• Partner with operational and revenue-related leaders on budgeting, forecasting, receivables oversight, reimbursement analysis, and improvements to accounting systems and reporting workflows.

• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibility in a controller or senior accounting capacity.
• Strong background in month-end and year-end close, financial statement preparation, and journal entry review.
• Demonstrated expertise in general ledger management, account reconciliations, and maintaining accurate financial records.
• Experience overseeing accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and cash flow activity.
• Solid understanding of internal controls, financial compliance requirements, and generally accepted accounting principles.
• Ability to analyze financial results, identify variances or risks, and communicate recommendations to leadership.
• Proven success supporting audits, coordinating required schedules, and responding to external auditor requests.
• Proficiency with budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting tools or accounting systems.
