Job Title: Director of Volunteer Services & External Relations

Job Purpose
The Director of Volunteer Services & External Relations is responsible for the strategic leadership, development, and integration of volunteer engagement, external partnerships, and community-facing programs at Ronald McDonald House Atlanta.
This role oversees Volunteer Services, volunteer & family engagement and external engagement initiatives to strengthen community relationships, enhance volunteer experience, and drive mission impact. The Director ensures alignment between volunteer engagement, donor cultivation, and programmatic needs, including oversight of meal donor and chef programs-while fostering meaningful pathways for volunteer-to-donor conversion.
The Director also provides oversite of the volunteer recruitment lifecycle, forecasts organizational coverage needs and addresses gaps in existing coverage. Ensuring the success of the volunteer services structural integrity.
The position works closely with all departments across the organization to elevate community visibility, steward key relationships, and ensure exceptional experiences for families, volunteers, and partners.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required; preferred fields include Human Services, Nonprofit Management, Communications, Public Relations, or Business.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in nonprofit leadership, volunteer management, or external relations.
  • Experience working in healthcare, family services, or mission-driven environments preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership in managing teams and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Strong relationship-building, public speaking, and community engagement skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, analyze program data, and drive strategic improvements.
  • Experience with CRM systems (e.g., Raiser's Edge) and volunteer management platforms (e.g., VolunteerHub).
  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and commitment to confidentiality.

Core Responsibilities
Volunteer & External Engagement Strategy
  • Develop and implement comprehensive strategies for volunteer engagement aligned with organizational goals.
  • Lead efforts to recruit, retain, and recognize a diverse and engaged volunteer base.
  • Expand community partnerships with corporate groups, schools, and civic organizations.
  • Serve as a key ambassador for Ronald McDonald House Atlanta at external events and networking opportunities during and outside of business hours.

Volunteer Services Program Oversight
  • Oversee the volunteer program budget.
  • Oversee and enhance the inventory control system across Donation Station rooms and basement storage areas at both Houses, ensuring spaces remain organized, accessible, and well-maintained; coordinate with the Marketing team to identify and secure needed resources.
  • Provide oversight of bulk and general donation intake, ensuring efficient processes, accurate tracking, and alignment with organizational needs.
  • Supervise the execution of volunteer service operations-including interviewing, onboarding, training, scheduling, and retention.
  • Foster strong, authentic relationships with volunteers through consistent, day-to-day engagement.
  • Conduct audits of scheduling and placement of volunteers across various programs and special events.
  • Ensure accurate tracking of volunteer activity, hours, and engagement metrics.
  • Lead volunteer recognition initiatives and appreciation events.
  • Supervise Volunteer Services staff, including performance management and professional development.
  • Oversee and enhance signature volunteer programs, including youth engagement initiatives and corporate volunteer opportunities.
  • Develop custom volunteer experiences with the volunteer services team for donors, corporate groups, community groups and service-based organizations.

Chef & Meal Donor Program Strategy & Oversight
  • Supervise Chef Program staff, including performance management and professional development.
  • Provide oversight of the chef and meal donor program budget, collaborating with the Culinary Manager to design and execute cost-effective sourcing strategies with key food suppliers, including Performance Food Group, Kroger, and Sam's Club.
  • Oversee food supplier relationships with Martin Brower and Second Helpings, ensuring timely coordination and cost-effective sourcing to support chef programs.
  • Oversee culinary volunteer and chef programs, including meal donors, corporate cooking groups, and community chefs.
  • Ensure alignment of meal programs with family needs, guest experience, and operational standards.
  • Partner with Development to elevate chef program visibility as a donor engagement and sponsorship opportunity.
  • Leverage volunteer experiences-particularly meal service and chef-led engagements-as strategic entry points for donor cultivation.
  • Support growth and innovation within culinary engagement programs.
  • Track all in-kind food donations and submit for end-of-year reporting.

Volunteer-to-Donor Conversion & External Relations Strategy
  • Partner closely with the Development team to design and implement a structured volunteer-to-donor pipeline strategy, ensuring alignment with fundraising goals and organizational priorities.
  • Identify and segment high-engagement volunteers, corporate groups, and meal donors (including chef program participants) for targeted cultivation and stewardship opportunities.
  • Develop intentional touchpoints and engagement pathways that move volunteers from participants into deeper involvement, including giving, advocacy, and sponsorship.
  • Collaborate with Development and Marketing to integrate volunteer stories, impact data, and experiences into donor communications, campaigns, and events via social media, newsletters and volunteer landing page.
  • Track and analyze conversion metrics (e.g., volunteer retention, donor conversion rates, and engagement levels) to inform strategy and improve outcomes.
  • Support and participate in donor stewardship activities, including tours, recognition events, and relationship-building opportunities with key external partners.

Administrative & Operational Responsibilities:
  • Ensure accurate documentation of volunteer hours, in-kind contributions, and program impact.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of volunteer policies, procedures, and training materials.
  • Oversee in-kind donation collections, sorting, and distribution efforts.
  • Support special events, providing volunteer coordination and logistical assistance as needed.
  • Handle facility or operational needs in the absence of designated staff.

Other Functions:
  • Define, track, and report on key performance indicators-including volunteer engagement metrics, donor participation, and retention trends-using data-driven insights to inform strategy, demonstrate program effectiveness, and communicate mission impact to internal stakeholders and external partners.
