A Brief Overview
Maintains clinical equipment through the effective use of the Medical Equipment Management Plan. Demonstrates a mastery of skills and tasks associated with the installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of complex biomedical equipment. Capable of educating others including clinical staff related to the technical integration of the device/system.
Essential Functions
- Fully experienced with an exceptional skill set or knowledge, works with minimal supervision; capable of serving as a trainer, mentor to junior and mid-level staff. Capable of performing in a lead capacity.
- Performs routine, complex and specialized tasks involved in the installation, maintenance, servicing, modification, troubleshooting and calibration as variety of clinical, surgical or imaging instrumentation by interpreting engineering and vendor information, schematic diagrams, and graphic illustrations.
- Performs electrical safety tests on healthcare technology using specialized test equipment.
- Exhibits a detailed understanding and can fully communicate the use of devices supported
- Provides advanced support of acuity equipment for direct patient care.
- Maintains in depth understanding of the operations and environment that they support such as hospital, clinic, etc.
- Demonstrates advanced experience in their assigned clinical environment.
- Demonstrates the ability to successfully solve organization-level customer service issues and complaints.
- Demonstrates in depth knowledgeable about both local and national public safety and regulatory issues.
- Demonstrates a mastery of at least two clinical equipment specialties. Specialties include diagnostic imaging, laboratory analyzers and automation, circulatory assist and perfusion systems, anesthesia machines, surgical lasers, biomedical device networks, and critical care ventilators so that work beyond single devices can be appropriately accomplished.
- Assists in the support of a systematic preventive maintenance program of healthcare technology.
- Documents the introduction of new medical equipment and evaluates to ensure it meets documented hospital safety requirements. Obtains and inputs information necessary to maintain the Clinical Engineering database.
- Diagnoses and corrects system and equipment malfunctions by making alterations, repairs and replacements to ensure that medical equipment and internal circuitry meet specified requirements; make necessary calculations for computing circuit elements necessary to adjust circuitry to specified requirements as instructed.
- Improves or makes special test setups to conduct functional checks of medical electronic test equipment.
- Documents repair and maintenance service activities including but not limited to detailed equipment repairs by equipment identification.
- Completes requisition for vendor service and repair/replacement parts.
- Interacts with equipment users to identify reasons contributing to equipment malfunctions.
- Monitors user errors as well as equipment failures and other problems in order to improve program quality.
- Completes rounds and maintains shop space in a responsible manner.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair and troubleshooting techniques through vendor training and review of manufacturers' manuals.
- Provides recommendations to supervisor for equipment performance problems, need for replacement, etc.
- Provides training and assistance to Biomedical Equipment Support Specialists I & II as directed.
- May provide leadership in managing short-term projects.
- Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

Education Qualifications
- Associate's Degree or higher in Biomedical Technology or related technical field Required or
- Completion of a relevant training program required, equivalent work experience may substitute for education. Required
Experience Qualifications
- 4-6 years years of experience as a Biomedical Engineering Technician Required
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of a wide range of sciences including, but not limited to, electronics (analog and digital), computer science/networking, mechanical engineering design, pneumatics, hydraulics, chemistry, physiology, medical terminology, anatomy, optics, and biology to perform duties of a broad scope and nature on complex and sophisticated patient-related medical systems and sub-systems.
- Ability to perform advanced testing and troubleshooting of medical devices involving their interfaces and connections to information systems either directly or through the hospitals hardwired and wireless networks.
- Knowledge of codes and standards relevant to safe operation of medical instrumentation such as National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the Joint Commission (TJC), and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI).
- Skill in the use of all types of test and calibration equipment such as digital multi-meters, electrical safety analyzers, defibrillator analyzers, patient simulators, digital oscilloscopes, pulse generators, and Local Area Network (LAN) analyzers in performing troubleshooting/repair and preventive maintenance activities.
- Ability to configure and maintain medical servers and desktop computers.
- Knowledge of contracting regulations, requirements, and specific contract specifications including performance-based contracts.
- Ability to comprehend and follow both written and oral instructions
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, and clinical and medical staff.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays, if necessary.
- Ability to accept rotating on-call assignment after a minimum of 120 days onboarding
Licenses and Certifications
- CBET - Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician Preferred and
- Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist (CRES) Preferred and
- Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES) Preferred or
- Certified Healthcare Technology Manager (CHTM) Preferred and
- At least one Core Certification from CompTia is Preferred
