Minimum Requirements- Bachelor's degree required.
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience coaching pitchers at the high school, collegiate, or elite travel level, OR significant collegiate/professional pitching experience.
- Deep understanding of pitching mechanics, arm care, and NJCAA rules, regulations, and academic eligibility requirements.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (required to drive team vans for travel).
Preferred Requirements- Community college experience in student services or advising.
- Excellent communication, mentorship abilities, and proficiency with student tracking software (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard, or Navigate).
- First Aid/CPR Certification.
- Possess a current CDL bus license.
- Experience with NJCAA and Region X policies and by-laws.
Primary Functions of PositionThe Academic Success Navigator and Assistant Baseball Coachis a dual-assignment position responsible for supporting both the academic achievement and athletic development of student-athletes. This role focuses heavily on the retention, academic tracking, and personal development of all SCC athletes at the NJCAA level. On the field, this position serves as the Pitching Coach for the baseball program, taking full responsibility for the development, training, health, and strategy of the baseball team's pitching staff.
Essential Duties:Academic Success Navigator- Monitor academic progress, class attendance, and grades of all student-athletes to ensure continuous NJCAA eligibility.
- Serve as an academic advisor to all student athletes.
- Support all student athletes in navigating college processes, balancing academic and personal responsibilities, and staying on track for completion.
- Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with all athletes to build study skills, time management habits, and clear degree-completion plans.
- Connect student-athletes with vital campus resources, including tutoring centers, financial aid, writing labs, and mental health counseling.
- Respond rapidly to faculty academic alerts regarding student-athletes and implement corrective action plans.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of student interactions, outreach, and referrals using the College's retention software.
- Works with Student Services and faculty members to ensure that student athletes receive intervention and academic assistance as needed.
- Assist student-athletes in understanding NCAA/NAIA transfer rules, ensuring their academic transcripts are prepared for progression to a four-year institution.
- Maintains a close working relationship with Student Services and instructional faculty to ensure academic progress for student-athletes.
- Organize and manage study hall opportunities for all student athletes.
- Participate in College programs, activities, and committees that promote student success, engagement, and retention.
- Demonstrate professionalism through collaboration, collegiality, and excellent customer service for internal and external partners.
- Model legal and ethical practices and guidelines as related to academic advising and/or counseling; adhere to FERPA guidelines, record keeping, and confidentiality.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the Dean of Student Services, Head Baseball Coach, Executive Vice President, and College President.
Assistant Baseball Coach- Design and implement daily bullpen routines, long-throw programs, strength and conditioning plans specific to pitchers, and arm-care/injury-prevention protocols.
- Call pitches during games, manage the bullpen, formulate scouting reports on opposing hitters, and assist the Head Coach with in-game pitching changes.
- Utilize modern baseball technology (e.g., Rapsodo, TrackMan, Synergy) to analyze pitch metrics, track player progress, and optimize mechanics.
- Identify, evaluate, and recruit high-caliber pitchers who meet both the academic and athletic standards of the NJCAA program.
- Assist with team travel, equipment management, fundraising, and the supervision of student-athletes during away games.
- Attend any mandatory Region X coaching meetings as necessary.
- Assist in the completion of any required Region X reports and documentation and ensure they are submitted on time.
- Read, understand, and abide by the current National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Constitution and Bylaws, the Region X Constitution and Bylaws, and the sport rule book as identified in the NJCAA Constitution and Bylaws.
- Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of the baseball field and surrounding athletic complex.
- Works with the Athletic Director on fundraising efforts to encourage direct giving, fundraising activities, and sponsorship support.
Skills and Abilities:- Ability to throw batting practice, hit fungos, stand for long periods, lift equipment up to 50 lbs., and work in varying outdoor weather conditions.
- Frequent evenings, weekends, and holiday hours during the peak spring season.
- Ability to organize, plan, and lead.
- Knowledge and understanding of the role of athletics in the educational process.
- Ability to be fair and unprejudiced in relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
- Ability to communicate well in oral and written form.
- Ability to travel with the athletic teams to games and events free of external engagements or responsibilities.

NC Retirement SystemThe North Carolina Retirement System provides the foundation of retirement income for employees who have a career in public service. The mandatory contribution by an employee to help pay for the benefit is 6% each pay period.
To be eligible for retirement benefits the employee must contribute to the plan for at least five years to receive a monthly benefit at age 60. Employees who contribute for 20 years are eligible to receive benefits at age 50, and those contributing for 30 years are eligible to receive benefits at any age.
Employees hired on or after August 1, 2011, would need 5 or more years of vesting period for TSERS retirement benefit eligibility for vested deferred, early and service retirement. Retirement is based on a Defined Benefit Plan 401(a) where employee benefits are sorted out based on a formula using factors such as salary history and duration of employment. Investment risk and portfolio management are entirely under the control of the State Retirement Plan. There are also restrictions on when and how you can withdraw these funds without penalties.
DisabilityEligible employees are covered under the Disability Income Plan if they are (or become) a State teacher or State employee and they are in service and a member of the Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System or a participant of the Optional Retirement Program.
Disability under the Plan is the mental or physical incapacity for the further performance of duty (the usual occupation) of a participant provided that such disability was not the result of terrorist activity, active participation in a riot, committing or attempting to commit a felony, or an intentional self-inflicted injury.
Benefits from the Plan are not available for a period of 60 continuous calendar days from the onset of disability. The 60-day waiting period is determined from the last actual day of service, the day of the disabling event if the disabling event occurred on a day other than a normal workday, or the day succeeding at least 365 calendar days after service as a State teacher or State employee, whichever is later.
The monthly short-term benefit will equal 50 percent of 1/12th of your annual base rate of compensation last payable to you prior to the beginning of the short-term benefit period (for teachers, annual base rate of compensation includes any local supplement or coaches supplement) plus 50 percent of 1/12th of your annual longevity payment, if any, to a maximum of $3,000 per month.
Long-term disability benefits are payable after the conclusion of the short-term disability period or after salary continuation payments cease, whichever is later. Benefits are payable for as long as you are permanently disabled, provided you meet the requirements described below.

401K Retirement Plan
Traditional pre-tax contributions - Pre-tax contributions are automatically deducted before any federal or state income taxes are taken out. Roth After-Tax Contributions
Roth contributions are automatically deducted from your paycheck after taxes are paid and therefore, reduce take-home pay dollar for dollar. Roth contributions and returns grow tax-deferred and can benefit members who anticipate being in a higher tax bracket while in retirement and would rather pay taxes at today's rate. Upon retirement, members qualify for income tax free withdrawals.

Life InsuranceBasic Life ($10,000) and AD&D is provided to all active full time employees working 30 hours or more per week. Employees have the option to purchase additional life insurance through the Voluntary Group Term Life Insurance benefit through Companion Life Insurance Company. Employees can select $10,000 to $500,000 in increments of $1,000.
The Guarantee Issue Amount for employees under age 60 is $100,000. Employees can also choose life insurance coverage for their spouse and/or dependent children from 6 months to age 26. Annual leave credits are provided for full-time or part-time (half-time or more) non-teaching, regular employees who are working or on paid leave for one-half or more of the regularly scheduled workdays in a month. The rate of leave earned is based on length of total permanent state service. Leave for part time employees is computed as a prorated percentage of the leave earned by full-time employees. Annual leave is earned based on years of service as shown in the following table:
