Job description

The Digital Media Engineer plays a crucial role in the planning and execution of Juilliard's video captures and live streams across all divisions -- Dance, Drama, and Music -- as well as special events. They will work closely with the audio and video engineers in the Recording Department and report to the Director of Recording and Classroom Technology.
- The successful candidate will show strong organization and planning skills with a superlative attention to detail.
- The successful candidate must be able to work well with all levels of employees, be flexible in nature, have sound judgment with an open and collaborative style that encourages teamwork and cooperation beyond the immediate team to the broader organization.
- Ability to work with a wide range of constituencies (staff, students, faculty, and administrators) with diplomacy and tact

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
The Digital Media Engineer will:
  • Design and implement media workflows for a variety of small and larger scale productions.
  • Manage data ingest, metadata, and file storage organization.
  • Work in collaboration with Video Production Manager to aid in meeting editing and media delivery deadlines.
  • Oversee and manage precise planning and configuration of signal routing for several venues and studios on the Juilliard Lincoln Center campus on a daily basis.
  • Liaise with departmental leadership, audio-video engineers, and other stakeholders to implement efficient workflow and system practices.
  • Develop and execute production solutions that improve reliability, scale, and performance of live streams across all locations.
  • Manage streaming encoders and accounts, monitor all streams (multiple simultaneous streams are possible).
  • Collaborate with Office of the Provost, Public Affairs, Concert Office, and Information Technology in scheduling and delivery of content.
  • Come prepared with a creative mindset and a willingness to innovate and execute ambitious projects in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree, B.S. or B. Tech, concentration in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • 2 to 5 years experience in a technical role.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills and the ability to work in a diverse team of audio and video professionals.
  • Ability to manage complex technical configurations connecting each venue to multiple control rooms, core control and storage.
  • Working knowledge of Audio/Video network management systems (familiarity with Dante Digital Audio Protocol and DashBoard Production Control by Ross is a plus.)
  • Familiarity with IP network management and the variability of the Internet (latency, bandwidth estimation, packet loss, etc.)
  • Knowledge of video technology, signal types, recording CODECs, file formats and transcoding, data ingest, and metadata management.
  • Experience in engineering in support of live and streaming production.
  • Willingness to have a flexible schedule and long hours when necessary.
  • A keen interest in new technology and production methods.
  • Strong interest in performing arts.

Preferred:
  • Familiarity with distributed data storage configurations, for example, CEPH, or equivalent.
  • Strong interest in video cameras and lenses, including remote controlled PTZ cameras and multi-camera switchers.
  • Familiarity with cloud workflow and virtual production.
  • Experience working in an academic or arts conservatory setting.
