What is a digital editor?

A digital editor is responsible for ensuring web content is commissioned, edited, and posted to the internet. Your primary duties as a digital editor are to consult with the marketing department about goals, assign stories or content to writers, edit the articles, and publish them on a website. You may also work with illustrators, photographers, and graphic designers to provide supplementary material. The qualifications for this job include a bachelor’s degree in a writing-intensive subject and career experience in print or digital media publishing. You also need excellent communication skills and a keen eye for detail.

How does a digital editor typically collaborate with writers, designers, and other stakeholders in the content creation process?

As a Digital Editor, collaboration is central to ensuring cohesive and engaging digital content. You’ll regularly work with writers to refine drafts, provide feedback, and align tone and messaging with brand guidelines. Additionally, you’ll partner with designers to integrate visuals that enhance the user experience, and may coordinate with marketing or SEO teams to optimize content for reach and engagement. Effective communication and project management skills are key, as you often act as a bridge between creative and strategic teams, ensuring deadlines are met and content objectives are achieved.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Digital Editor, you need strong writing, editing, and content management skills, ideally supported by a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), SEO tools, and analytics platforms is typically required. Excellent attention to detail, creativity, and strong organizational skills help individuals excel in curating and optimizing digital content. These skills ensure that digital publications are engaging, accurate, and aligned with audience needs and business goals.

What is the difference between Digital Editor vs Content Writer?

AspectDigital EditorContent Writer

Skills & CredentialsEditing, digital media, SEO knowledge, journalism backgroundStrong writing, research, SEO, and storytelling skills
Work EnvironmentMedia companies, online publishers, digital marketing agenciesBlogs, websites, marketing teams, freelance platforms
Common UsageEditing and managing digital contentProducing original written content

The main difference is that a Digital Editor manages and edits digital content, ensuring quality and consistency, while a Content Writer focuses on creating original written material. Both roles often require SEO knowledge and digital media skills, but their core responsibilities differ in content creation versus content management.

Can I work as a digital editor remotely?

Many digital editors can work remotely, especially if their role involves content management, editing, and publishing using digital tools and platforms. Remote work opportunities depend on the employer's policies and the specific job requirements, such as familiarity with content management systems and communication tools. Flexibility varies by organization, but remote digital editing is increasingly common in the industry.

How much do digital editors get paid?

Digital editors typically earn a median annual salary of around $50,000 to $70,000, depending on experience, location, and the size of the organization. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced editors or those in senior roles can earn over $80,000 annually. Skills in content management systems and editing tools can influence compensation.

How to get into a digital editor career?

To become a digital editor, gain experience in writing, editing, and content management, often through internships or entry-level roles. Developing skills in digital tools like content management systems, SEO, and multimedia editing can improve prospects, and a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related fields is typically preferred.

Job description

Stand Together is a philanthropic community that helps America’s boldest changemakers tackle the root causes of our country’s biggest problems, from education to the economy, broken communities, and toxic division, among dozens of other pressing issues. We provide our partners with access to resources including funding, thought leadership, a network of peers, and a playbook for applying proven principles to transform lives and society.

As a Senior Editor, Brand & Narrative on our Editorial team, you will supervise a team of editorial specialists and drive content to align with brand and messaging standards. The Senior Editor will work alongside a dynamic team of marketing, communications, and copywriter professionals implementing engaging and effective content strategies that inspire movements of millions of people to participate in new and better ways to tackle our country’s biggest problems. These strategies span multiple channels and platforms, including web articles, video publishing assets, paid ads, and organic social channels, among others.

The ideal candidate brings experience in marketing and communications, publishing, journalism, and/or related fields to support day-to-day implementation and long-term strategic projects. As Senior Editor, you’ll be responsible for working across multiple teams in a highly matrixed organization, liaising with external agency partners, ensuring all content adheres to our brand guidelines, and applying an entrepreneurial mindset to continuously identify opportunities to optimize content against defined goals and KPIs.

How You Will Contribute

Content Editing and Strategy

  • Review and revise content produced by a team of copywriters, ensuring clarity of messaging, adherence to brand standards (positioning, tone, voice), accuracy (spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax), and quality assurance.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders as marketing campaigns take shape, advising on what editorial can bring to the table – and then executing with your team of writers and/or freelancers.
  • Partner with the intelligence and digital teams to track audience data and engagement metrics against KPIs that effectively measure the impact and success of written content; continuously identify opportunities to optimize current and future content accordingly.
  • Identify gaps and recommend updates to brand content and style guides.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Develop communication touchpoints with key stakeholders to ensure an effective two-way flow of knowledge and feedback that best supports and advances content objectives.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure final products align with diverse audience interests and perspectives.
  • Partner with the production team to ensure that website content is published on time and in accordance with quality assurance standards.

Liaise with agency partners where appropriate, including content briefings and drafts.

What You Will Bring
  • 7+ years of professional experience in marketing and communications, publishing, journalism, and/or related fields, demonstrating career growth and an intimate familiarity with the latest content best practices and trends.
  • 2+ years of supervising a team.
  • Proven success in translating organizational vision and messaging into compelling content
  • Demonstrated experience with understanding the needs of different audiences/stakeholder groups and finding mutually beneficial solutions when those needs appear to be at odds.
  • A highly organized approach with proven ability to deliver to tight deadlines and work within a fast-paced and entrepreneurial environment requiring quick execution and flexibility.
  • Superior written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Extreme attention to detail.
  • Baseline knowledge of SEO.
  • Preference for exposure to agency relations (as a client or agency representative).
  • Enthusiasm to contribute to Stand Together's vision and principled approach to solving problems, and a commitment to stewarding our culture, which champions values including transformation and innovation, entrepreneurialism, humility, and respect.
What We Offer
  • Competive benefits: Enjoy a 6% 401(k) match with immediate vesting, flexible time off, comprehensive health and dental plans, plus wellness and mental health support through Peloton and Talkspace.
  • A meaningful career: Join a passionate community of over 1,300 employees dedicated to improving lives and driving innovative solutions to complex social challenges.
  • Commitment to growth: Thrive in a non-hierarchical environment that empowers employees to discover, develop and apply their unique talents.
  • Competitive compensation: Our approach rewards the value you create through competitive salaries and bonus opportunities, allowing you to share in the success you help drive.
Our Values

Working for an organization within the Stand Together philanthropic community is different from many other places. The culture is deeply rooted in Principle Based Management® (PBM®), a framework guided by the principles that drive human progress, such as dignity, openness, and bottom-up empowerment. PBM® empowers employees to be entrepreneurial, to innovate, and to continually drive transformation.

We believe diversity fuels creativity, broadens knowledge, and helps drive success. That is why we’re proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer and strive to treat all employees and applicants with honesty, dignity, and respect.

120000 - 145000 USD a year

For this role, the anticipated base salary range is $120,000–$145,000 per year. This role may also be eligible for additional bonus compensation designed to align total compensation with an employee’s overall contribution to the organization.

Our Principles-Based Management™ (PBM) compensation philosophy is grounded in an individualized approach that rewards the long-term value each person creates for the organization. Compensation decisions are informed by a variety of factors, including relevant experience, capabilities, demonstrated skills, role responsibilities, and expected contribution. Consistent with this approach, base salary may vary within or outside of the anticipated range based on these considerations.
