What is a digital editor?

A digital editor is responsible for ensuring web content is commissioned, edited, and posted to the internet. Your primary duties as a digital editor are to consult with the marketing department about goals, assign stories or content to writers, edit the articles, and publish them on a website. You may also work with illustrators, photographers, and graphic designers to provide supplementary material. The qualifications for this job include a bachelor’s degree in a writing-intensive subject and career experience in print or digital media publishing. You also need excellent communication skills and a keen eye for detail.

How does a digital editor typically collaborate with writers, designers, and other stakeholders in the content creation process?

As a Digital Editor, collaboration is central to ensuring cohesive and engaging digital content. You’ll regularly work with writers to refine drafts, provide feedback, and align tone and messaging with brand guidelines. Additionally, you’ll partner with designers to integrate visuals that enhance the user experience, and may coordinate with marketing or SEO teams to optimize content for reach and engagement. Effective communication and project management skills are key, as you often act as a bridge between creative and strategic teams, ensuring deadlines are met and content objectives are achieved.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Digital Editor, you need strong writing, editing, and content management skills, ideally supported by a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), SEO tools, and analytics platforms is typically required. Excellent attention to detail, creativity, and strong organizational skills help individuals excel in curating and optimizing digital content. These skills ensure that digital publications are engaging, accurate, and aligned with audience needs and business goals.

What is the difference between Digital Editor vs Content Writer?

AspectDigital EditorContent Writer

Skills & CredentialsEditing, digital media, SEO knowledge, journalism backgroundStrong writing, research, SEO, and storytelling skills
Work EnvironmentMedia companies, online publishers, digital marketing agenciesBlogs, websites, marketing teams, freelance platforms

The main difference is that a Digital Editor manages and edits digital content, ensuring quality and consistency, while a Content Writer focuses on creating original written material. Both roles often require SEO knowledge and digital media skills, but their core responsibilities differ in content creation versus content management.

Can I work as a digital editor remotely?

Many digital editors can work remotely, especially if their role involves content management, editing, and publishing using digital tools and platforms. Remote work opportunities depend on the employer's policies and the specific job requirements, such as familiarity with content management systems and communication tools. Flexibility varies by organization, but remote digital editing is increasingly common in the industry.

How much do digital editors get paid?

Digital editors typically earn a median annual salary of around $50,000 to $70,000, depending on experience, location, and the size of the organization. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced editors or those in senior roles can earn over $80,000 annually. Skills in content management systems and editing tools can influence compensation.

How to get into a digital editor career?

To become a digital editor, gain experience in writing, editing, and content management, often through internships or entry-level roles. Developing skills in digital tools like content management systems, SEO, and multimedia editing can improve prospects, and a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related fields is typically preferred.

Job description

Business Editor, The Dallas Morning News:

The Dallas Morning News is looking for an editor who sees the biggest business story in America unfolding right here in Texas - and has the ambition and skill to own it.

The Business Editor will lead coverage of one of the most consequential economic regions in the country. This is not a caretaker role - it's an opportunity to define how one of America's great newspapers covers a city and state in the middle of a historic transformation.

Texas has surged past 31 million residents, and demographers project the state could approach 37 million by 2036 - the equivalent of adding a mid-sized city every year for the next decade. That growth is reshaping industries, straining infrastructure, rewriting the rules of housing and labor, and raising urgent questions about access, equity and opportunity. For a business journalist, there is no better beat in America right now.

Dallas-Fort Worth is home to more than 20 Fortune 500 companies, nearly 80 publicly traded firms exceeding $1 billion in revenue, two major airports, two of the industry's dominant airlines, and six major league sports franchises - all set against a backdrop of thousands of companies representing every sector of the modern economy. And the region's financial footprint is only growing: The rise of "Y'all Street" and the emergence of the Texas Stock Exchange signal that Dallas is no longer just a place where business happens; it's becoming a place where the rules of business get written. The stories here have national reach and global stakes.

We want an editor who sees the full picture - who can connect a corporate earnings report to a family's kitchen table, who pushes reporters to go deeper and move faster, and who understands that great business journalism isn't just about markets. It's about people, power and consequences. Strong editing instincts, a track record of developing talent, and the drive to build something are essential. Experience in digital storytelling, data journalism and audience development will set you apart.

Dallas itself is part of the draw. The cost of living is competitive, the talent pool is growing, and the energy here is unmistakable. It's a city that rewards ambition - in business and in journalism.

Come help us cover it!

What you'll do

  • Lead a team of two assistant editors, 10 reporters and two columnists who produce distinctive business journalism - enterprise, features and breaking news - that sets our report apart from the competition. The team's work spans an expanded Business Sunday section, five email newsletters and the "Commerce Street" LinkedIn newsletter. You'll champion diverse voices, subjects and perspectives at every level of coverage.

  • Own the analytics. Track performance across your coverage areas, develop insights from the data and communicate goals, wins and losses clearly to your team and newsroom leadership.

  • Edit with high standards. Ensure stories are reported fairly, accurately and thoroughly, with sharp, compelling writing that serves our audience and holds up to scrutiny.

  • Build and develop talent. Conduct regular one-on-ones, provide honest coaching and feedback, manage performance and handle all aspects of hiring - from recruitment through onboarding and retention.

  • Work across the newsroom and beyond. Collaborate with departments inside and outside the newsroom to maximize the editorial and revenue potential of business content, including video, audio and special digital initiatives.

  • Stay hands-on. Bring strong news judgment, a willingness to create content when needed and the organizational ability to manage multiple priorities on deadline.

  • Communicate up and out. Meet regularly with your supervisor and maintain proactive, consistent communication about business coverage goals, team performance and major initiatives - no surprises.

  • Lead. Oversee scheduling, workload distribution and day-to-day team operations - and show up as a full contributor to newsroom-wide projects and initiatives.

What it takes

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field

  • 5 years or more of business journalism or related experience

  • Ability to innovate and quickly iterate as we seek to develop new strategies for engaging audiences

  • Strong news judgment and a commitment to accuracy

  • Track record of adapting quickly and moving at the speed of news

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
