Job description

Complete Description:

The Client is seeking a highly skilled Technical Writer with proven experience in developing clear, concise, user-friendly documentation for complex technical products. This position is vital in ensuring that technical information is communicated effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences. The selected candidate will develop documentation for a cloud-based software development project, with the initial phase currently in progress.

The Technical Writer will collaborate closely with developers, product managers, and subject matter experts (SMEs) to create and maintain user guides, API documentation, release notes, and other technical documentation in support of an Agile development team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise, and accessible language for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Manage multiple documentation projects simultaneously while adhering to established deadlines.
  • Collaborate with developers, product managers, and SMEs to produce documentation that supports an Agile development process, including user guides, API documents, and release notes.
  • Maintain strong version control practices and facilitate documentation reviews to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Ensure all documentation complies with agency standards, accessibility requirements, and formatting guidelines.
  • Develop documentation that aligns with user needs and addresses potential pain points.
  • Continuously update and refine documentation based on product changes and user feedback.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Technical Communication, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in technical writing, preferably in a government or technology environment.
  • Expert in MS Word, Google Docs, Confluence, or similar documentation tools.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat, SnagIt, or similar tools for creating and editing visuals.
  • Experience with Git or other version control systems (contributor or read-only level) and documentation platforms such as GitBook or similar.
  • Understanding of Scrum/Agile methodology and its application to documentation.
  • Familiarity with REST APIs, JSON, and software architecture concepts.
  • Ability to read and understand code snippets.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a focus on clarity and attention to detail.
  • Experience creating, editing, and maintaining various types of technical documentation, including manuals, user guides, standard operating procedures, and more.
  • Ability to interview subject matter experts (SMEs) and distill complex information into clear and accessible content.
  • Experience with government documentation standards and accessibility compliance (highly desirable).
  • Familiarity with diagramming tools (Lucidchart, Draw.io, etc.) is highly desirable.
  • Basic knowledge of programming languages or IT systems (highly desirable).
  • Experience with UX writing is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of programming languages, such as Markdown and HTML/CSS (highly desirable).
  • Experience writing documentation for software products, including SaaS, desktop, or mobile applications (highly desirable).
