What Does a DevOps Manager Do?

As a DevOps manager, your job is to oversee both a software development process and its continued operation after release. In this role, you may determine how or if to integrate cloud systems into your development plan, evaluate performance on each operating system or environment, and otherwise help streamline software delivery. Many DevOps managers perform a variety of tasks, ranging from managing teams to testing products or setting up contracts with customers. This makes flexibility and the ability to adapt to different needs in a time-sensitive environment essential to your success in this field. Many companies are still deciding how to integrate DevOps into their overall planning and structure, so the precise duties of your job may change over time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Manager, you need a strong background in systems administration, cloud infrastructure, automation, and continuous integration/delivery (CI/CD), typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS/Azure, and certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer or Azure DevOps Engineer are highly valued. Exceptional leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help you manage cross-functional teams and drive process improvements. These competencies are critical for ensuring seamless software delivery, operational efficiency, and alignment between development and IT operations.

What are some of the common challenges a DevOps Manager faces when leading cross-functional teams?

A DevOps Manager frequently encounters challenges in aligning development, operations, and QA teams towards shared goals, especially in organizations transitioning to DevOps practices. Managing communication gaps, balancing competing priorities, and fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement are key hurdles. Additionally, staying current with rapidly evolving tools and technologies while ensuring the team's skills remain up-to-date can be demanding. Addressing resistance to change and ensuring security and compliance within automated pipelines are also common challenges in this role.

What is a DevOps Manager?

A DevOps Manager is a professional who leads and oversees the implementation of DevOps practices within an organization. They are responsible for bridging the gap between development and operations teams, ensuring smooth collaboration, and automating processes to improve software delivery speed and reliability. DevOps Managers also manage the infrastructure, monitor system performance, and ensure that security and compliance standards are met. Their role is crucial in fostering a culture of continuous integration, deployment, and improvement.

Senior DevOps / Platform Engineer

At Accenture Federal Services, nothing matters more than helping the US federal government make the nation stronger and safer and life better for people. Our 13,000+ people are united in a shared purpose to pursue the limitless potential of technology and ingenuity for clients across defense, national security, public safety, civilian, and military health organizations. Join Accenture Federal Services, a technology company within global Accenture. Recognized as a Glassdoor Top 100 Best Place to Work, we offer a collaborative and caring community where you feel like you belong and are empowered to grow, learn and thrive through hands-on experience, certifications, industry training and more. Join us to drive positive, lasting change that moves missions and the government forward!

Accenture Federal Services is seeking a Senior DevOps / Platform Engineer to join our secure cloud platform team supporting government customers at Hill Air Force Base. This role is execution-focused with strong DevOps engineering depth. You will design, build, and operate the CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, and platform tooling that enable rapid, secure delivery across a complex government program. This role operates at the intersection of development and operations. The ideal candidate brings hands-on GitOps and infrastructure-as-code expertise, is comfortable in classified multi-network environments, and embodies extreme ownership-taking full accountability for infrastructure components from design through production operations.

What Success Looks Like:

  • CI/CD pipelines are reliable, automated, and integrated with security scanning, enabling teams to deliver faster without introducing risk
  • Infrastructure is defined as code, version-controlled, and repeatable across environments-no snowflake systems
  • Platform tooling (Crossplane, Backstage, Argo CD) reduces friction for engineering teams and accelerates delivery velocity
  • Security and compliance controls are baked into pipelines, not bolted on; STIGs, accreditation requirements, and hardening standards are met without slowing delivery
  • You operate with minimal supervision, proactively identifying infrastructure gaps, driving solutions, and communicating impact to stakeholders

What you'll do:

  • DevOps & Platform Engineering
    • Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for rapid, reliable delivery across government cloud environments
    • Build and manage infrastructure-as-code using Terraform, Ansible, and AWS CDK to enable consistent, repeatable deployments
    • Operate and evolve platform engineering tooling including Crossplane, Backstage, and Argo CD for self-service delivery infrastructure
    • Implement and maintain GitOps workflows using GitLab and/or GitHub, supporting advanced branching strategies, code review, and pipeline orchestration
    • Manage containerization and orchestration across development and production environments using Kubernetes and Docker
  • Cloud Infrastructure & Operations
    • Design and implement secure, scalable cloud architectures on AWS GovCloud (primary) and Azure Government
    • Configure and optimize network architecture, including VPC design, hybrid connectivity, security groups, and load balancing
    • Manage identity and access management across cloud platforms using least-privilege principles
    • Administer Linux and Windows systems, including configuration management, monitoring, logging, and alerting
    • Troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues and implement performance optimizations
  • Security & Compliance
    • Implement and maintain security controls aligned with NIST 800-53, FedRAMP, and DISA STIG requirements
    • Integrate automated security scanning (SAST, DAST, SCA) into CI/CD pipelines for continuous compliance validation
    • Support security audits, ATO processes, and compliance assessments with organized, audit-ready artifacts
    • Manage encryption, key management, and access controls in classified and multi-network environments
    • Develop and maintain security documentation and operational procedures
  • Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
    • Operate within a SAFe Agile framework, participating in sprints, standups, PI planning, and retrospectives
    • Mentor team members and share knowledge across the organization; drive technical standards adoption
    • Proactively identify infrastructure gaps and optimization opportunities before they become delivery problems
    • Document infrastructure decisions, runbooks, and operational procedures as a core discipline

Ideal Technical background:

  • GitOps & IaC: Strong background in GitOps workflows; Terraform, Ansible, and/or AWS CDK proficiency required
  • CI/CD: Hands-on experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines; GitLab and/or GitHub required
  • Containers: Kubernetes proficiency for container orchestration across development and production; Docker required
  • Platforms: Experience with next-generation platform engineering tools - Crossplane, Backstage, and/or Argo CD preferred
  • Scripting: Proficiency in Python, Bash, and PowerShell; competency across Linux and Windows environments

What you'll need:

  • 5 years of cloud engineering and infrastructure experience
  • 3 years designing and implementing secure cloud architectures for enterprise or government environments
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code and DevOps practices in production environments
  • Experience in classified environments (NIPR, SIPR, JWICS, or equivalent)
  • Background in systems engineering, networking, and/or security hardening

Bonus Points if you have:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related technical field - not necessarily required
  • Cloud certifications: AWS (any level) or Azure - willingness to obtain AWS certification within 90 days of hire accepted
  • CompTIA Security+ (current) or equivalent security certification
  • Kubernetes certifications (CKA, CKAD)
  • CISSP or other advanced security certifications
  • Agile/Scrum certifications
  • Government Cloud experience: AWS, ARM templates, Azure DevOps, security services
  • Experience with configuration management tools: Ansible, Chef, or Puppet
  • Advanced networking: SD-WAN, network security, traffic analysis
  • API integration and automation development
  • Multi-cloud architecture and cross-platform integration
  • Experience with EVM and program-level financial performance reporting

Clearance:

  • Must possess an active Top Secret level security clearance or higher
