Devops Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Manager, you need a strong background in systems administration, cloud infrastructure, automation, and continuous integration/delivery (CI/CD), typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS/Azure, and certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer or Azure DevOps Engineer are highly valued. Exceptional leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help you manage cross-functional teams and drive process improvements. These competencies are critical for ensuring seamless software delivery, operational efficiency, and alignment between development and IT operations.

What are some of the common challenges a DevOps Manager faces when leading cross-functional teams?

A DevOps Manager frequently encounters challenges in aligning development, operations, and QA teams towards shared goals, especially in organizations transitioning to DevOps practices. Managing communication gaps, balancing competing priorities, and fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement are key hurdles. Additionally, staying current with rapidly evolving tools and technologies while ensuring the team's skills remain up-to-date can be demanding. Addressing resistance to change and ensuring security and compliance within automated pipelines are also common challenges in this role.

What is a DevOps Manager?

A DevOps Manager is a professional who leads and oversees the implementation of DevOps practices within an organization. They are responsible for bridging the gap between development and operations teams, ensuring smooth collaboration, and automating processes to improve software delivery speed and reliability. DevOps Managers also manage the infrastructure, monitor system performance, and ensure that security and compliance standards are met. Their role is crucial in fostering a culture of continuous integration, deployment, and improvement.

What Does a DevOps Manager Do?

As a DevOps manager, your job is to oversee both a software development process and its continued operation after release. In this role, you may determine how or if to integrate cloud systems into your development plan, evaluate performance on each operating system or environment, and otherwise help streamline software delivery. Many DevOps managers perform a variety of tasks, ranging from managing teams to testing products or setting up contracts with customers. This makes flexibility and the ability to adapt to different needs in a time-sensitive environment essential to your success in this field. Many companies are still deciding how to integrate DevOps into their overall planning and structure, so the precise duties of your job may change over time.

The DevOps Engineer, IT Automation will be a key technical member of the IT team, responsible for reducing manual work through automation, scripting, systems integration, and sound DevOps practices. This is a hybrid role. The DevOps Engineer will design, build, review, and maintain automation workflows that connect internal IT systems, identity platforms, Atlassian products, banking applications, and service management tools.

The ideal candidate has strong hands-on experience with Python, PowerShell, REST APIs, JSON, version control, and modern automation practices. This individual will partner with IT operations, security, compliance, and business teams to modernize provisioning and deprovisioning, automate access reviews, strengthen identity workflows, and improve operational efficiency in a regulated banking environment.

Essential Job Functions
  • Design, build, and maintain reliable automation workflows across IT systems, identity platforms, ticketing systems, financial applications, and business tools.
  • Develop integrations using APIs, scripting, webhooks, event-driven workflows, and automation platforms to streamline recurring IT and business processes.
  • Automate user lifecycle processes, including onboarding, offboarding, access changes, group management, entitlement reviews, and recurring user access reviews.
  • Support least-privilege access, audit readiness, and regulatory compliance across enterprise applications.
  • Create and maintain scripts, lightweight applications, and integration logic using Python, PowerShell, and other scripting or programming languages.
  • Serve as a primary reviewer for IT automation code, ensuring scripts and workflows are reliable, secure, readable, well-documented, and maintainable.
  • Apply DevOps principles to IT operations, including version control, peer review, reusable code, CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, GitLab, or similar), structured deployments, testing, documentation, and monitoring of automation workflows.
  • Help establish practical standards for safely deploying and maintaining internal automations.
  • Support secrets management, audit logging, and SIEM integrations to strengthen security posture and audit readiness in a regulated banking environment.
  • Develop and support automation within Jira, Jira Service Management, Confluence, and related Atlassian products.
  • Configure workflows, automate ticket routing and approvals, integrate with external systems, and improve service catalog, notification, escalation, reporting, and support processes.
  • Assist with administration and automation across Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Active Directory, Windows Server, endpoint management, OneDrive, and related infrastructure platforms.
  • Support operational improvements through scripting, integration, and process modernization.
  • Evaluate and apply AI-assisted development and IT productivity tools where appropriate.
  • Experience with coding assistants such as Claude Code, Codex, or similar tools is a plus.
  • Create and maintain clear technical documentation for scripts, integrations, workflows, access review processes, system configurations, deployment procedures, and operational runbooks.

Requirements

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in DevOps, software engineering, systems administration, IT automation, platform engineering, or a similar technical role.
  • Strong, demonstrable proficiency in Python is required. Experience with PowerShell, Bash, JavaScript, or other scripting and programming languages is strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with REST APIs, webhooks, JSON, modern authentication methods, and system-to-system integrations.
  • Experience using Git or similar version control systems, with the ability to review automation code for reliability, readability, security, and long-term maintainability.
  • Experience with Entra ID, Active Directory, and Microsoft 365, including identity lifecycle management, access reviews, group management, and user provisioning workflows.
  • Experience administering, automating, or integrating Atlassian products such as Jira, Jira Service Management, Confluence, Assets, Automation for Jira, or Atlassian APIs.
  • Solid understanding of Microsoft 365, Windows Server, endpoint management, networking fundamentals, virtualization, and core security practices.
  • Experience with AI-assisted coding tools or developer productivity platforms such as Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, or similar tools is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of security and compliance frameworks relevant to financial institutions, such as FFIEC, NIST (e.g., 800-53, CSF), ISO 27001, and SOC 2, including how automation and audit logging support control objectives.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, ownership mindset, and the ability to collaborate effectively across IT, security, compliance, and business teams.
