Job description

The Laboratory Manager provides leadership and oversight for the daily operations of the hospital and clinic-based laboratory activities to ensure accurate, timely, and
cost-effective testing and reporting of results. This role is responsible for supervising laboratory personnel, managing workflows, maintaining quality control and regulatory compliance, and ensuring adherence to safety standards. The Laboratory Manager collaborates with providers, nursing staff, department leaders, and other healthcare professionals to support patient care, clinical decision-making, and operational efficiency. The incumbent serves as the Technical Supervisor to maintain laboratory standards and accreditation that align with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) of 1988 and the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Additional responsibilities include staffing and scheduling, performance management, policy implementation, budgeting, and continuous quality improvement to uphold high-quality laboratory standards.
Qualifications:
• Graduation from a medical laboratory technician / medical laboratory scientist program with internship from an accredited institution required.
• Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist (MT), or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
(ASCP) or equivalent certification.
• Bachelor of Science degree in medical technology, biomedical science, biological science, or chemical science from an accredited institution.
• Current American Heart Association BLS certification within three (3) months from date of hire.
• Ability to successfully pass a color blindness (color vision) screening.
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a medical laboratory scientist with emphasis as a generalist and with at least two (2) years of experience in a supervisory role with involvement in high complexity testing.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Serves as the Technical Supervisor to maintain laboratory standards and accreditation that align with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) of 1988 and the College of American Pathologists (CAP).
  • Manages and evaluates the operations, programs, contracts, service agreements, and resources for clinical areas to ensure the provision of safe, high-quality care and
    achievement of key performance indicators.
  • Defines, implements, and monitors standards of performance in quality assurance and performance improvement, and cost effectiveness to support the standardization of procedures, extension of resources, improvement of laboratory services, provision of new services, and other issues of similar complexity and consequence.
  • Makes employment decisions; supervises and evaluates the work of clinical and administrative staff in accordance with human resource standards; manages daily
    staffing levels and scheduling; allocates resources to support positive patient outcomes and experiences.
  • Responsible for ensuring the laboratory has qualified personnel with documented training and experience; provides education, guidance, coaching, and development
    while addressing performance or technical issues as needed.
  • Ensures laboratory activities are conducted in timely and cost-effective manner and in compliance with organizational values, professional standards, internal
    policies/procedures, and applicable regulatory/accreditation requirements.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates new/revised procedures, guidelines, and/or training materials in support of clinical laboratory areas to ensure consistency with the values of the organization and compliance with applicable regulatory/accreditation requirements.
  • Implements new processes and performance improvement activities; ensures staff receive the necessary training to enhance their understanding of quality and
    performance improvement initiatives.
  • Ensures all clinical and related support activities are fully documented in accordance with the standards and practices of the organization and monitors compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Participates in annual budget planning and administration activities; allocates resources appropriately to the laboratory environment; monitors and approves expenditures within defined scope of responsibility; explains and addresses budget variances in a timely manner.
  • Identify adequate staffing levels and maintains appropriate coverage to meet operational objectives; monitors work schedules to meet budgetary requirements and
    controls overtime and/or premium pay.
  • Maintains evidence of continuing education appropriate for skill level and specific
  • clinical laboratory areas of responsibility; performs related duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) of 1988 and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) proficiency testing and documentation.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Information System (LIS) software used in medical laboratories to manage patient data, track samples, and handle diagnostic testing from
    order to result.
  • Skilled in maintaining a safe laboratory environment in compliance with applicable regulations and practice standards.
  • Skilled in basic laboratory operations, including but not limited to, specimen collection, instrumentation operation skills, and microscopic examination.
  • Skilled in monitoring laboratory work performed to determine that medically reliable data are being generated and correlates laboratory data for diagnosis and patient management.
  • Ability to provide consultation to providers regarding the medical significance of laboratory findings as appropriate.
  • Ability to relate and function effectively with applicable accrediting and regulatory agencies, appropriate administrative officials, the medical community, the medical
    device industry, and the patient population served.
  • Ability to build and maintain professional relationships with vendors, negotiate and monitor service agreements, and ensure that contracted services meet organizational standards, regulatory requirements, and quality expectations.
  • Ability to convey highly technical information related to laboratory analyses to staff and outside laboratory personnel.
    Physical Demands and Work Environment:
  • Frequently sits, stands, and walks throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull 25 pounds.
  • Requires repetitive hand and wrist motions and manual dexterity.
  • Involves use of computers for major portions of the workday.
  • Needs ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on telephone.
  • Exposure to blood, body fluids or tissue, communicable diseases, chemicals, including but not limited to sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items. The employee is eligible for Hepatitis B Vaccination if desired.
  • Must be able to perform the primary duties and responsibilities of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
