What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Development Editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Development Editor, you need a strong grasp of editorial processes, manuscript evaluation, and subject-matter expertise, typically supported by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with publishing software like Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, and content management systems is crucial, as is experience with style guides such as Chicago or APA. Exceptional communication, project management, and collaboration skills help build productive relationships with authors and cross-functional teams. These abilities ensure high-quality content development, adherence to publishing standards, and successful project delivery.

How does a Development Editor typically collaborate with authors and other editorial team members throughout the publishing process?

As a Development Editor, you work closely with authors to shape manuscripts, providing detailed feedback on structure, content, and clarity. Collaboration is key—regular meetings and written communications help guide authors through revisions and ensure the manuscript aligns with the publisher's vision. You’ll also coordinate with copy editors, proofreaders, and sometimes designers to maintain consistency and quality throughout the publication process. This role requires excellent communication skills and the ability to balance constructive criticism with encouragement, ensuring a smooth and productive workflow for all parties involved.

What Is a Development Editor?

A development editor works with an author to define and improve the structure and content of a manuscript. Development editors may start early on, from the point when the manuscript is accepted for publication, noting a lack of focus and helping the author refine a more definite direction for the book. They may also discover inconsistent tone, an unclear audience, or a stilted writing style, and provide suggestions to resolve these issues. Some development editors review the book chapter by chapter, until the book is ready for publication. Most developmental editors have a degree in English or a related subject. Many have experience in publishing as copy editors or proofreaders, or have been writers themselves before moving to become developmental editors.

What is a Development Editor?

A Development Editor is a publishing professional who works closely with authors to shape and refine the content, structure, and overall direction of a manuscript before it moves to copyediting or production. Their primary focus is on the big-picture elements such as organization, clarity, pacing, and coherence of the work. Our mission-driven approach and unwavering dedication to excellence ensure that we continue to deliver superior products and solutions to our customers around the world.
THE WORK
The primary responsibility of the role is S1000D authoring and maintenance. The incumbent will develop, edit, and maintain data modules, data sets, and illustration references in accordance with S1000D (versions 3.0 through 4.1). Should have an familiarity with BREX rules and Customer Business decision templates.
A key element of the position is supplier data acceptance and integration. The author will review inbound supplier deliverables-such as data modules, illustrations, and video/audio media-to verify S1000D compliance, completeness, and alignment with the program's Contract Data Requirements List's (CDRL's). The role requires coordinating technical reviews with suppliers, issuing non‑conformance notifications when needed, and tracking the resolution of those issues through the Supplier Management Portal. Validated supplier data will then be imported into the internal authoring environment (e.g., Arbortext, Contenta), with full audit‑trail maintenance to support configuration control.
Technical writing and documentation support are also critical. The author will produce supporting narrative, procedural, and maintenance instructions that complement the S1000D modules, adhering to business decisions and all applicable customer specifications. When outsourcing authoring tasks, the incumbent will generate Statements of Work (SOW) that clearly define scope, deliverables, schedule, and quality metrics.
Project and schedule management duties include developing and maintaining delivery schedules for emerging projects, ensuring that authoring milestones are synchronized with overall system development timelines. The author will actively participate in Integrated Product Team (IPT) meetings, offering status updates, risk assessments, and technical clarifications to both internal teams and third‑party suppliers.
In the realm of quality assurance and continuous improvement, the author will compile QCPC (Quality Clinic Process Chart) metrics for completed publications, conduct root‑cause analyses on any defects, and produce corrective‑action reports. Support for internal and external AS9100 audits is required, supplying the necessary documentation and evidence of compliance. The role also contributes to process‑improvement initiatives designed to boost authoring efficiency, promote data reuse, and strengthen supplier collaboration.
Finally, stakeholder collaboration is a core part of the role. You'll work directly with program managers, contracts, finance, engineering, and external customers to clarify requirements, iron out data inconsistencies, and support cost‑to‑price analyses. As the go‑to S1000D expert, you'll routinely advise cross‑functional teams on best‑practice authoring, the most effective tooling, and optimal data‑management strategies, helping the organization maintain consistent, high‑quality technical publications.
