What Does a Development Director Do?

A development director is responsible for fundraising strategies and initiatives to help promote the business and operations of nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and hospitals. As a development director, your job duties include reaching out to potential benefactors, maintaining relationships with existing donors, devising new strategies for fundraising, and organizing fundraising events. These events may consist of benefit concerts, dinners, parties, and special events. Collaborating with company management is also a regular part of your job. Depending on the organization, your exact duties may vary.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Development Director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Development Director, you need expertise in fundraising strategy, donor relations, and nonprofit management, often supported by a relevant degree or CFRE certification. Familiarity with donor management systems (like Salesforce or Raiser’s Edge) and CRM platforms is typically required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills set top performers apart in this role. These abilities are crucial for driving organizational growth, securing funding, and building lasting partnerships essential to the nonprofit’s mission.

How does a Development Director typically collaborate with other departments to achieve organizational goals?

A Development Director frequently works cross-functionally with teams such as marketing, finance, and program management to align fundraising strategies with organizational objectives. This collaboration often involves coordinating on campaigns, sharing donor insights, and ensuring consistent messaging across platforms. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential, as the Development Director serves as a bridge between departments to maximize impact and foster a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization.

Development Directors in large organizations or successful entrepreneurs in the tech, finance, or real estate sectors can earn $1,000,000 or more annually through salaries, bonuses, and profit sharing. High-level executive roles such as CEOs and CFOs also often reach this income level, especially in major corporations. These positions typically require extensive experience, leadership skills, and advanced education or industry-specific certifications.

With 30 years of expertise in payment technology, Paysafe helps businesses and consumers lift every experience through seamless, secure payment solutions, including card payments, digital wallets such as Skrill, eCash solutions like PaysafeCard, and a suite of local payment methods. With approximately 2,900 employees across 12 countries and annualized transactional volume of $167 billion in 2025, Paysafe connects people and businesses worldwide through innovative digital payment experiences.
Your career starts here. Help us build and deliver innovative payment solutions.
Summary
We are seeking an experienced Business Development Director to drive new business growth within the Platforms ecosystem, specifically targeting digital wallet solutions (including embedded wallets and turnkey wallets). This role requires a strong consultative sales approach, solid payments experience, and the ability to manage multi-stakeholder sales cycles. The ideal candidate is an effective communicator, capable of building meaningful client relationships, executing structured sales processes, and collaborating internally to support successful deal outcomes.
Responsibilities
  • Own and grow a multimillion-dollar sales pipeline for digital wallet solutions, including embedded wallets and turnkey wallets into the platforms space (ISVs, Merchant of Record (MoR), and Marketplaces). Wallet flows will be B2B2C.
  • Drive new customer acquisition across enterprise, mid-market, and high-growth fintech segments, depending on territory and vertical focus.
  • Position wallet solutions across key use cases such as consumer wallets, merchant wallets, B2B payouts, stored value, loyalty, and closed- or open-loop payments.
  • Deliver against annual revenue targets through effective pipeline development and disciplined sales execution.
  • Develop and deliver value-based proposals that articulate ROI, cost savings, revenue enablement, and improved customer experience.
  • Build and maintain relationships across operational and senior client stakeholders to support long-cycle deal progression.
  • Execute a structured sales approach, including account research, prioritization of prospects, understanding commercial/technical drivers, and supporting multi-threaded engagement plans.
  • Manage the full sales cycle-from prospecting and qualification through solution positioning, negotiation, and contracting.
  • Maintain working knowledge of the payments landscape, competitive offerings, and relevant trends to support informed client conversations.
  • Represent Paysafe professionally in client meetings, industry events, and partner discussions to help strengthen our market presence.
  • Prepare and deliver clear, compelling presentations, proposals, and RFP/RFI responses.
  • Maintain accurate CRM entries, pipeline tracking, and forecast updates in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product, legal, risk, onboarding, and marketing teams to progress opportunities and ensure a smooth path to signature.
  • Travel domestically and internationally as required.

Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, or related field; or equivalent experience, required.
  • 8+ years of B2B sales experience, with 4+ years in payments, fintech, or financial infrastructure required.
  • Proven success selling digital wallets, embedded finance, payment platforms, or ecosystem-based solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience selling embedded wallet solutions (APIs, SDKs, developer-first offerings) and turnkey or SaaS wallet platforms (end-to-end programs including UI, ledgering, compliance, and operations)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multi-stakeholder, solution-based sales processes.
  • Strong communication skills, with experience preparing and delivering presentations, commercial proposals, and persuasive written materials.
  • Ability to understand and articulate complex commercial or technical requirements to internal and external audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain disciplined pipeline management.
  • Proven success operating in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
