What is a developer?

A software developer—sometimes referred to as a software engineer, computer programmer, or computer scientist—designs and develops programs, applications, websites, and databases. Their responsibilities include creation, testing, and modification of the code that runs programs within IT systems. Software developers generally have a bachelor’s degree in computer science and are familiar with writing code in at least one programming language.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, paired with a solid understanding of algorithms and software development principles, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes cloud platforms or specific frameworks is typical. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for building reliable, maintainable software and collaborating efficiently within development teams.

What are some common challenges developers face when working on large-scale projects, and how can they overcome them?

Developers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple team members, managing complex codebases, and ensuring consistent documentation. To overcome these obstacles, it's important to follow best practices like version control, code reviews, and regular communication through agile methodologies. Additionally, leveraging collaboration tools and maintaining clear documentation can help streamline workflows and minimize misunderstandings within the team.

Job description

About Delta Intelligent Building Technologies (Canada) Inc.(formerly known as Delta Controls).

Delta Intelligent Building Technologies (Canada) Inc. (a subsidiary of Delta Electronics) is a leading building controls manufacturer with over 300 partners in more than 80 countries. For over three decades, we have provided innovative building automation solutions for commercial, healthcare, education, and leisure facilities. We delivered the world’s first fully integrated BACnet building solution for HVAC, lighting, and access control.

Job Summary

The DevOps Manager owns DevOps practice, tooling, and release management across the entire Product Development department. This role is accountable for release and deployment success and works collaboratively with each product's DevOps Specialist and team lead to resolve issues. The role also owns operations and maintenance of the department's shared DevOps tooling, including source control and code quality platforms, and owns the enterprise On-Call/incident response program for SaaS applications.

DevOps Specialists embedded within individual product teams continue to report administratively to their Team Leads or Enterprise Directors; the DevOps Manager is their functional manager, setting technical direction and standards for the discipline org-wide, without holding direct people-management responsibility over them.

Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Release & Pipeline Management

  • Accountable for the overall success of build and deployment processes across all PD products — reliability, consistency, and adherence to DevOps standards — partnering with each product's DevOps Specialist and team lead to diagnose and resolve issues
  • Define and promote consistent merge/branching/release standards across PD; work with product teams to adopt them
  • Advise and coordinate on deployment windows and cadence for products to avoid cross-team conflicts
  • Maintain and continually improve CI/CD infrastructure standards across PD

Enterprise DevOps Tooling

  • Own operations, maintenance, and administration of enterprise DevOps tooling used across Product Development (GitLab, SonarQube, Jenkins, and others)
  • Ensure availability, performance, and security of these platforms, including upgrades, patching, and capacity planning
  • Manage access, permissions, and integration of these tools across product teams and global offices
  • Evaluate, select, and onboard new enterprise DevOps tooling as the department's needs evolve
  • Maintain licensing, vendor relationships, and cost management for owned tooling

Functional Management of DevOps Specialists

  • Set technical direction, standards, and best practices for all DevOps Specialists in PD
  • Provide technical mentorship, coaching, and career guidance to DevOps Specialists across the organization
  • Conduct technical reviews of DevOps Specialists' work as input to their performance reviews (in partnership with their direct managers)
  • Identify practice or performance concerns and raise them with the DevOps Specialist's manager; work collaboratively with the engineer to implement the agreed resolution
  • Participate in hiring processes for new DevOps Specialists across PD (technical evaluation/input)

On-Call Program Ownership

  • Own the enterprise on-call/incident response program in its entirety, including tooling, escalation policies, and rotation structure
  • Drive the phased rollout: runbook completion, tool launch, and progression to full 24x7 coverage
  • Set and enforce runbook standards and completion requirements across product teams
  • Own incident response process design, including severity definitions, escalation paths, and post-incident review process
  • Coordinate with product/team leads to ensure adequate on-call staffing and rotation fairness

General

  • Continually improve DevOps and release practices based on incident trends, release outcomes, and team feedback
  • Report on release health, deployment frequency/failure rate, and on-call/incident metrics to the Chief Product Development Officer

Required or preferred skills and abilities

  • Strong technical communication and cross-team influence skills — able to enforce standards across multiple offices and teams
  • Demonstrated experience managing or leading release/deployment processes at scale, across more than one product line
  • Experience administering enterprise DevOps tooling (e.g., GitLab, SonarQube, or equivalents)
  • Experience designing or running an on-call/incident response program
  • Knowledge of CI/CD tooling and practices (e.g., GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, Kubernetes/Helm)
  • Ability to mentor, coach, and hold accountable team members outside a direct reporting line
  • Outstanding diagnostic and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of SDLC, application architecture, deployment, and infrastructure practices across multiple products
  • Conflict resolution skills, particularly for cross-team/cross-office release disputes

Minimum Qualifications:

  • College diploma or University degree in computer science, information systems, or software engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of experience in DevOps, release engineering, or related infrastructure roles
  • Prior experience in a functional/matrixed management role (technical authority without direct people-management authority) preferred
  • Experience running or building an incident response/on-call program preferred
  • Experience administering source control and code quality platforms at scale preferred

Work Location: In-office environment that is currently 3 days per week
City: Surrey
Type: full-time, Permanent
Salary: 108,000 - 122,000 CAD
This range reflects the minimum and maximum target payable for the base salary of new hires across all Canadian locations. Actual compensation may vary outside this range and is dependent on various factors.
