Their role can span across industries such as architecture, graphic design, product design, and digital media.

What does a design manager do?

A design manager oversees a design team during a project and typically works in the construction and architecture industries. As a design manager, you may work for specialty companies that contract out to construction firms on a per-project basis. Or, you may spend your career working as an in-house design manager for a construction company or architect firm. Regardless of the location of your job as a design manager, your duties revolve around supervising the design of a building project and include adhering to legislation and codes, eliminating safety and financial risks, and advising clients during development.

To thrive as a Design Manager, you need a strong background in design principles, project management, and leadership, typically supported by a degree in design or a related field and several years of design experience. Job description

Job Title: Design Manager (Preconstruction / EPC)
Location: Waukesha, WI, travel for meetings and client needs (up to 50%)
Company: The Boldt Company - Data Centers
Anticipated Salary Range: $108,000 - $161,000
Additional Compensation: Bonus eligible, company paid travel
At Boldt, we build more than complex projects, and we build strong relationships, great teams, and lasting impact.
As a Design Manager, you will play a critical leadership role at the front end of our most complex projects, helping shape how work is planned, developed, and delivered. This role is responsible for leading the design and preconstruction process, bringing together owners, engineers, trade partners, and internal teams to develop solutions that are aligned, constructible, and built for success.
You won't just coordinate design-you will own the integration of scope, schedule, cost, and risk, ensuring decisions are made at the right time and teams are working together toward a common goal. This is a highly visible role across our power, renewables, and industrial markets, where your ability to think ahead, challenge assumptions, and drive outcomes will directly impact project performance.
If you're someone who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys building something from the ground up, and brings both leadership and hands-on execution to your work, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact while growing within a team committed to doing things the right way-together.
The anticipated salary range for this position is $108,000 - $161,000 annually. This information reflects the anticipated base salary for this position based on current market data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Actual pay will be adjusted based on an individual's skills, experiences, education, and other job-related factors permitted by law.

Our culture blends accountability with support; where learning, mentorship, and collaboration, power results. You won't just contribute to projects that matter; you'll grow alongside people who are investing in your success.
What You Bring
  • 10+ years of experience in design management, preconstruction, project management, or EPC project delivery in data center or large-scale construction project environments
  • Proven ability to lead design and preconstruction phases of complex construction projects
  • Experience coordinating with engineering firms, architects, and construction teams
  • Strong understanding of scope, cost, schedule, and constructability integration
  • Experience with risk management, contract development, and procurement strategy
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive alignment across stakeholders
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to facilitate, challenge, and influence decisions
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture, or Construction Management

Nice to Have
