Job description

As a Senior Technician, you will play a key role in supporting innovative product development by designing, constructing, and documenting laboratory setups that enable safe, reliable, and customer-centric testing. You will work closely with engineers and cross-functional partners to ensure high-quality results, maintain laboratory excellence, and contribute to breakthrough solutions in the Utilities and Energy technology space. This position requires strong technical skills, accountability, and a collaborative approach aligned with Itron's commitment to authenticity, agility, and continuous innovation.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design, construct, and document laboratory setups that support R&D testing in a safe, compliant, and customer-focused manner.
  • Perform precision soldering-including surface-mount components-and assist with complex wiring tasks.
  • Maintain calibration, organization, and quality compliance of lab hardware to ensure test accuracy and equipment reliability.
  • Research, procure, and document new lab equipment, ensuring traceability and alignment with project requirements.
  • Manage test equipment lifecycle activities, including replacements, firmware upgrades, and swap-outs, with an emphasis on operational continuity and accountability.
  • Operate advanced test instrumentation, such as spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, and digital multimeters.
  • Partner with engineers to support functional testing, data capture, analysis, and preparation of clear, actionable summaries.
  • Coordinate testing activities with accelerated life testing facilities to support product reliability initiatives.
  • Oversee onsite storage, inventory management, and organization of lab assets to maintain an agile and efficient workspace.
Required Skills & Experience
  • 5+ years of experience as a laboratory technician or equivalent technical experience, preferably in an engineering or R&D environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in soldering techniques, including working with surface-mount components.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory safety, hardware handling protocols, and quality-compliance standards.
  • Hands-on experience operating test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, and digital multimeters.
  • Proven ability to organize, maintain, and track laboratory equipment, components, and storage systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to support functional testing, detailed data capture, and results interpretation.
  • Excellent documentation and record-keeping skills with a focus on accuracy, traceability, and transparent communication.
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft tools, including Word, Excel, and Visio, for documentation and reporting.
  • Familiarity with network switches and routers, including configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Raspberry Pi computers, microcontrollers, and mini-PC systems used in test environments.
  • Experience with Rapid Prototyping (Bench-top SMT Assembly)
  • Experience with Rack-Based Test Integration (ATE)

Pay Transparency Info:
The successful candidate's starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills and experience and may vary by location. The base salary is $60,000 - $132,000
