What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Lab Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Lab Assistant, you need foundational knowledge of design principles, familiarity with lab protocols, and typically a degree or coursework in design or a related field. Proficiency with design software (such as Adobe Creative Suite or CAD programs), 3D printers, and other fabrication tools is often required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you manage projects and collaborate with team members. These skills and qualities are essential for supporting creative processes, ensuring safety, and maintaining efficient lab operations.

What are Design Lab Assistants?

Design Lab Assistants are support staff who help maintain and manage operations in design laboratories, such as those found in schools, universities, or creative studios. They assist students, faculty, or professionals by preparing materials, setting up equipment, ensuring lab safety, and sometimes providing technical guidance on design software or tools. Their role is essential for keeping the lab organized and facilitating a productive environment for creative work. Depending on the institution, they may also help with troubleshooting equipment and supporting design projects.

What are some common challenges faced by Design Lab Assistants, and how can they be successfully managed?

Design Lab Assistants often encounter challenges such as balancing multiple projects with tight deadlines, maintaining organized workspaces, and troubleshooting equipment issues. Successfully managing these challenges involves developing strong time-management skills, staying proactive with regular equipment maintenance, and communicating clearly with team members and supervisors about project priorities. Embracing a collaborative attitude and being open to feedback can also help Design Lab Assistants adapt quickly and contribute effectively to the creative process.

Like our products, we work better together. We connect with candor and care, seeking out diverse perspectives from our customers, communities and each other.
Life at Axon is fast-paced, challenging and meaningful. Here, you'll take ownership and drive real change. Constantly grow as you work hard for a mission that matters at a company where you matter.
Your Impact:
Dedrone stands out as the global leader in airspace defense technology and counter UAS solutions. Engineering at Dedrone is tasked with delivering innovative solutions and products to maintain our position on the cutting-edge of innovation.
Sr. Electrical Engineers at Dedrone have full design ownership over next-generation cUAS technology from conceptualization through production, and their work is highly visible to senior executives. Our passionate leadership and cross-functional collaboration with product managers, mechanical engineers, industrial designers, and manufacturing teams is vital to the success of the team and ensuring the safety of the general public for generations to come.
This role emphasizes electrical system architecture, schematic/circuit design, PCB design, RF and power systems design, and system-level test and verification. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with schematic capture, PCB layout, mixed-signal design, embedded firmware, and designing for rugged/regulated environments.
Location: Onsite at our offices in Sterling, VA
What You'll Do:
  • Lead electrical system and subsystem development from concept through production, ensuring designs meet safety, EMC, and reliability standards.
  • Define electrical specifications for sensors, radios, power distribution, and control electronics for cUAS platforms.
  • Design and review detailed schematics for mixed-signal and high speed FPGA-based boards, perform or assist in PCB layout.
  • Develop and implement custom DC/DC power circuit designs with high power integrity, ensuring robust operation across varying power levels (10-1000W) and conditions (e.g., MIL-STD-1275, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461)
  • Design custom high power AC/DC power supplies (500-3000 Watts) with power factor correction, supporting wide input voltage ranges and tightly regulated DC outputs for demanding cUAS applications.
  • Perform hardware bring-up, debugging, and system integration, leveraging lab instrumentation to characterize and validate performance of custom and COTS electronics.
  • Conduct electrical analysis with a strong emphasis on simulation driven design, including signal integrity, power integrity, EMI/EMC mitigation, and thermal considerations to ensure robust first pass hardware performance.
  • Produce high fidelity prototypes and iterate quickly to qualify designs; develop test plans and lead verification and validation activities.
  • Collaborate regularly with domestic and international stakeholders across engineering, product, and program teams.
  • Rigorously document and manage electrical design specifications, BOMs, firmware releases, test reports, and compliance evidence.
What You Bring:
  • Bachelor's, Master's, pr PhD in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Proven experience in electrical design and system integration for complex hardware products-ideally in cUAS, Satcom, defense, robotics, or wireless systems.
  • Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (e.g., Altium) and experience with DFM/DFX practices.
  • Expertise in power electronics design: battery management systems, DC/DC. AC/DC converters, power sequencing, and thermal management for electronics.
  • Solid understanding of signal integrity, power integrity, EMI/EMC mitigation techniques, and relevant test/qualification methods.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities; comfort debugging at the board and system level.
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and present technical tradeoffs to stakeholders.
