What is a DEI Program Manager?

A DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Program Manager is a professional responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing initiatives that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within an organization. They work to create policies, training programs, and strategies that foster a more inclusive and equitable workplace. DEI Program Managers often collaborate with leadership, HR, and employee resource groups to assess organizational needs, measure progress, and ensure that DEI goals are integrated into business practices. Their ultimate aim is to cultivate a work environment where all employees feel valued and have equal opportunities for growth.

What are some common challenges DEI Program Managers face when implementing diversity initiatives across an organization?

DEI Program Managers often encounter challenges such as resistance to change, varying levels of buy-in from leadership and staff, and the need to tailor programs to fit the unique culture of different departments. Balancing short-term goals with long-term culture shifts requires strong communication and the ability to measure impact effectively. Staying up-to-date with best practices and ensuring representation in decision-making processes are also crucial to overcoming these challenges.

To thrive as a DEI Program Manager, you need a solid understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles, often supported by a degree in human resources, social sciences, or related fields and relevant experience. Familiarity with HR information systems, data analytics tools, and DEI-related certifications such as Cornell's Diversity and Inclusion certificate is typical. Strong communication, cultural competence, and project management skills help drive organizational change and foster inclusive environments. These skills are crucial for effectively implementing DEI initiatives, measuring progress, and building trust across diverse teams.

Job description

Amazon Healthcare Security's (HealthSec) AI team is hiring a Technical Program Manager to drive delivery of AI security initiatives across Amazon Health Services (AHS). You will own cross-team coordination, dependency management, and delivery tracking across three parallel programs: securing AHS GenAI applications in production, hardening the AI-SDLC for AHS builders, and driving adoption of AI-powered security tooling that scales protection across healthcare verticals.
Working closely with HealthSec security engineers, AHS AI application builders, product teams, and cross-org stakeholders (AWS Bedrock, AppSec), you will ensure programs deliver on time while navigating complex dependencies across multiple external teams. You will manage escalations with senior leadership, drive stakeholder alignment, and maintain delivery across initiatives that directly impact HIPAA compliance, Amazon security bar, and AHS builder productivity.
Key job responsibilities
Plan, implement, and deliver AI security programs across HealthSec AI initiatives, collaborating with security engineers, product managers, business owners, and senior leadership to align with strategic vision and goals.
Own successful delivery of impactful, cross-functional program initiatives across multiple external teams while simultaneously tracking multiple team goals and projects.
Develop and maintain strong working relationships with technical and non-technical teams; drive escalation and alignment with executive leadership across multiple organizations.
Drive cross-functional planning by working closely with engineering leads to develop security feature plans, including roadmaps, dependency identification, and resourcing plans.
Manage programs across cross-functional teams, building sustainable processes and coordinating release schedules; drive security review process improvements to reduce cycle times and unblock launches.
Facilitate application security reviews and privacy reviews with appropriate stakeholder teams; coordinate compliance activities with HIPAA and Amazon security policies; coordinate pilot programs and adoption rollouts for AI security tooling across 1,106+ AHS builders.
Establish metrics and regular reporting mechanisms (MBR, QBR, flash reports) for measuring security posture and program health across all initiatives.
Drive, mature, and improve organizational AI security program processes; identify trends and insights to innovate and find better ways of engaging AHS builder customers.
