WHO WE ARELOOKING FOR
is seeking a Mechanic Instructor for its Division of Fleet Management. The Mechanic Instructor will be part of the Training/Quality Assurance Team at the Division of Fleet Management Services.
What You'll Be Doing
Employee will work on specific shifts to be assigned, based on a 24/7-hour operation, and will be required to travel to multiple locations to complete work assignments. Employee will provide training, guidance and assistance to Mechanic Technicians and lesser-skilled employees in diagnosing and resolving difficult and unusual problems encountered n the maintenance and repair of heavy-duty vehicles, mobile and/or commercial transit equipment.
Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Inspecting work in progress or upon completion to see that repair and maintenance work are properly performed, providing guidance, assistance and training, and responding to employees' maintenance/repair questions.
  • Furnishing technical advice on difficult/complex jobs.
  • Providing instruction to individuals and groups of employees performing maintenance and repair work.
  • working with management to advise on training needed by individuals and groups of employees.
  • Providing recommendations for process improvements.
  • Monitoring and enforcing preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Monitoring repair times, materials used, and information input into FASTER, the vehicle maintenance management system.
  • Reading and interpreting technical manuals, service/recall bulletins, and fleet defect reports; recommending classes/training to improve effectiveness and efficiencies; and
  • Contributing to work plans and evaluations of Mechanic Technicians; providing recommendations regarding purchase of shop owned tools and equipment; performing quality assurance inspection and report findings.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination)
Experience: Seven (7) years of verifiable, progressively responsible experience in problem diagnosis, repair, maintenance and inspection of transit bus, automotive, heavy-duty diesel or gasoline transit buses, or heavy-duty trucks.
Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:
At time of appointment, possession and maintenance of:
• A Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsements, issued by applicant's state of residence; and
• US Environmental Protection Agency Air Conditioning Certification (Clean Air Act, 1990, Section 608 and 609).
Within eighteen (18) months from date of appointment employee must obtain and maintain:
• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications as (a) Master Medium-Heavy Truck Technician and (b) Master Transit Bus Technician; and,
• Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Industrial Forklift Certification.
Physical Demands: Must be able to perform physically strenuous work while standing, lying down, or sitting; and pull, push, lift and carry items that weigh up to 100 pounds, and occasionally items in excess of 100 pounds.
Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences
  • Bachelor's degree in an automotive related area or graduation from an automotive trade school. (An equivalent amount of relevant work experience will be considered.)
  • Experience preparing and conducting training sessions.
  • Experience applying the principles, practices, and concepts of automotive/ heavy equipment fleet operations and management.
  • Experience scheduling, assigning and reviewing work in progress and, upon completion, to see that repair and maintenance work are properly performed.
  • Experience using automated systems technology and software applications.

Leave Benefits
Our generous leave package starts with non-MLS permanent and term employees earning 15 days of sick leave and 15 days of annual leave in their first year, as well as up to three additional personal days each calendar year. Positions in MLS earn 35 days of paid time off each year. In addition, we offer all employees 10 paid holidays. Retirement Benefits
All permanent and term positions are eligible for robust retirement plans. Public safety positions are eligible for a defined benefit pension plan in which they are vested after only five years. Employees in non-public safety positions can participate in retirement plans that contribute up to 12 percent of their annual salary. All employees can also participate in a supplemental retirement plan, the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, to contribute even more to their retirement goals.

Participants who meet all requirements may qualify for forgiveness on the remaining balance on their Direct Loans after making 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time in a qualifying public service position.
